I was completely stunned, staring blankly at Lucas.

His expression was calm.

“I told you before, tell me today, and tomorrow we can get married. Evelyn, I never lie.”

“But…” I tugged at the corners of my lips, “But don’t you mind my past?”

Lucas looked at me. “That’s the past. The one marrying me is not the past you, but the you of

now.”

His palm was burning, and the warmth seemed to spread from the back of my hand all the way to my heart.

I couldn’t hold back the tears anymore. It felt as though all my defenses were lowered, and I no longer had to cry silently. Choking, I said, “But you never asked me if I want to marry you.”

Lucas paused for a moment and then seriously asked, “Evelyn, will you marry

me?”

Marry this ordinary man, who might not have a lot of money, but would give you full access to his bank accounts. The house and car would be in your name, and he would never betray you, never walk away from you–Lucas?

I could hardly bear the ache in my nose, and through the tears, I kissed Lucas’s lips. “I will.”

Lucas looked at me gently, and then, in the first rays of the morning sun, deepened the kiss.

Afternoon. The Estate.

Alexander had knelt in the study the whole night. Vivienne looked at him with pity in her heart. “Dad has said that it’s impossible for you to marry Evelyn. Even if you kneel until you die, she will never marry into our family!”

Alexander opened his eyes and glanced at her coldly. “It has nothing to do with you.”

Vivienne continued, “It has nothing to do with me? If you had married me back then, I wouldn’t have married your brother…”

She bit her lip, tears streaming down her face. “I’m telling you, even if she marries into the Whitmore family, I won’t make it easy for her! Dad won’t let her either!”

Alexander lowered his gaze, and after a while, he stood up. Vivienne looked at him, surprised. “Have you made up your mind?”

Alexander looked at her coldly. “She doesn’t need to deal with this. I will take her away and give her the life she deserves.”

With that, he ignored Vivienne, who was crying, and walked out.

His assistant was waiting downstairs.

“Mr. Whitmore, the Hartwell family has been dealt with. They will never appear in front of Miss Hartwell again.”

Alexander nodded, “Go to her place.”

The assistant hesitated for a moment, then spoke with some reluctance.

“Miss Hartwell is not at home right now; she’s at the bridal shop.”

Alexander gave him a cold look. “A bridal shop?”

The assistant gritted his teeth and hesitated for a long time, then gathered his courage and spoke.

“At 8 a.m. this morning, she and Lucas got their marriage license.”

One month later, at the wedding venue.

I was applying makeup in front of the mirror.

Lily was nervously pacing around me.

“It’s my first time being a bridesmaid, what if I mess up the process later? And my makeup–did I do it right?”

I tried to reassure her, “There will be an emcee to remind us, plus we already rehearsed. Don’t

worry.”

“I can’t not be nervous at my best friend’s wedding!” Lily said. “And by the way, when did you and Lucas get together? Spill it fast!”

I smiled helplessly. “It was three years ago when I returned to the country for a project. I happened to be in the same team as Lucas, and that’s how we met.”

She seemed to remember something suddenly and asked.

“Wait, did Alexander find out about this?”

I paused for a moment. “Yes.”

He probably found out on the day of the wedding.

“Did he not react at all?”

Lily asked suspiciously, then her eyes widened.

“He’s not planning something big and quiet to steal the wedding, is he?”
