The Day Silence Spoke novel Chapter 110

Clifford pushed himself up from the floor and started unbuttoning his shirt as he headed upstairs. “Report to the office tomorrow.”

Just like that, he had decided the fate of their marriage, and her life.

Latisha went to the bathroom to wash up. Afterward, she checked her phone, trying Mrs. Dashiell’s number again, but it was still unreachable. She ended up sleeping on the sofa again, curled into a tight ball.

...

When she woke, it was morning.

By the time she made her own breakfast and set it on the table, Clifford was coming downstairs. When Mrs. Dashiell had been here, he never ate at home, but today, he sat down at the table.

Just like she used to, Latisha served him a bowl of soup, watching him intently as he ate.

After a few sips, Clifford looked up. “What is it you want to say?”

Latisha pressed her lips together and signed, *Do I have to go to work at your company?*

“You don’t want to?”

*What about Yesenia?*

“She resigned,” Clifford replied.

So that was it. Yesenia was off to pursue her acting career, and now there was a space for her by his side. Not a space she had earned, but one he had benevolently granted her. Should she feel honored?

“Eat your food.”

*Can I not go?*

“Mrs.—Latisha, I’ll call you by your name at the office,” he said. “This is a summary of Yesenia’s daily tasks. Please take a look, and message me if you have any questions.”

Latisha nodded, taking the file from him and reading it carefully. The duties were simple: manage Clifford’s daily trifles, like tidying his desk, ordering meals, booking flights, and accompanying him to social events. The more complex tasks were not for her.

With nothing to do, Latisha sat at her desk, lost in thought.

There were four other secretaries in the department, not counting Ziven, and all of them kept glancing her way.

One annoyance leaves, and another arrives? They had all come to see that desk as belonging to Clifford’s mistress. Was this new girl another one of Mr. Lambert’s lovers?

While they were whispering amongst themselves, Yesenia strode into the office. The moment she saw her old desk, her smile vanished, replaced by a thunderous expression. She marched over and slammed her hand on the desk.

“Who said you could sit here?!”
