Renata clung to Clifford’s arm. He had promised he would take care of her, and now he was her only hope.
Clifford looked down at her. Her eyes glistened with tears, filled with an unwavering trust in him.
After a moment, Clifford’s gaze shifted to Santino. Their eyes met, and an invisible battle sparked in the air. The tension was palpable, even if no one else understood its source.
“Get these three out of here,” Clifford ordered.
The maids quickly led the men away. Clifford then dismissed the rest of the staff, leaving only the four of them in the living room.
“Clifford,” Polly began, her voice strained now that they were alone. “What are we going to do?”
“What are we going to do?” Clifford repeated, his eyes fixed on Santino. A slow smile spread across his face. “Let’s ask Santino. Perhaps he has a better idea.”
At his words, Renata’s head snapped toward her husband. Santino’s eyes flickered, but he mirrored Clifford’s smile.
“Clifford, what brilliant ideas could I have? Renata did all of this behind my back. I’m just as shocked as everyone else.”
“Is that so? Then I’m curious, how did Reuben find those three men?”
Santino frowned, feigning deep thought. “Well, I couldn’t say. Reuben is determined to get justice for his wife and children. It’s not surprising he managed to track them down.”
Clifford nodded thoughtfully. “True. So, Santino, your wife is facing prison time. Aren’t you going to do anything?”
Santino paused, momentarily lost for words.
“Honestly, I don’t know what to do right now,” he finally said. “I was hoping to hear your thoughts. After all, you’re the one Renata trusts most.”
