The Day Silence Spoke novel Chapter 260

She quickly put on the raincoat and a pair of rain boots before heading to the backyard. When she got there, she was stunned. There were vast vegetable patches and numerous greenhouses. This place really was a farm. It was surrounded on all sides by mountains, making escape virtually impossible. No wonder Santino was so confident letting her go out alone to pick vegetables.

Latisha grabbed a basket and went into the garden. It had everything—pumpkins, tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes…

From the attic window of the farmhouse, Santino leaned against the frame, his eyes fixed on the figure in the garden below. From this angle, Latisha, clad in the oversized raincoat, looked incredibly small. She tottered through the muddy rows with her basket, stumbling several times.

Watching her, the signature smile on Santino’s lips shifted slightly. His eyes were on her, but his mind seemed to be miles away, seeing a different figure from his memory—one who had also stumbled, again and again, falling into his arms.

The moment Latisha looked back, the two images merged, and Santino’s expression changed abruptly. The amusement in his eyes vanished, replaced by a chilling coldness.

Latisha returned with a basket full of vegetables, trudging through the mud back to the house. The large farm had no electricity or gas. She had to cook with a wood-fired stove and draw water from a well. It was every bit the ‘back-to-nature’ retreat advertised by the signs outside.

Unfamiliar with the primitive stove, she sat on a small stool, puffing her cheeks to blow on the embers, then scrambled to wash and chop the vegetables.

By the time the meal was ready, her face was smudged with soot. Santino glanced at the dishes on the table, then at Latisha. She stood before him, her hands clasped nervously, her dirty face making her look like a little stray cat. A laugh escaped his lips.

Latisha dreaded that sound more than anything. She stood rooted to the spot, gesturing anxiously: *I can cook it again.*

Santino shook his head. “No need. Sit down and eat.”
