The Day Silence Spoke novel Chapter 273

With a splash, Latisha was pulled from the water. She gasped for air, coughing up mouthfuls of water with every breath. The world spun around her as she was laid on the ground. She forced her eyes open but could see nothing. It was pitch black.

Someone was pressing on her chest, and salty water uncontrollably flowed from her mouth. After what felt like an eternity, the air forced from her lungs surged upwards.

"Cough!"

Latisha turned her head and spat out a large mouthful of water. The cold air rushed into her nose and mouth, and finally, she could breathe deeply again.

"Are you out of your mind, Latisha?" a voice roared above her. "Who told you to jump? Who gave you permission to jump?"

"If you wanted to die, why didn't you just tell me? I should have put a bullet in you this morning!"

The man's voice was a furious snarl, an anger she had never heard from him before. In her daze, Latisha tried to see the face above her, but everything was still blackness. She could only feel drops of water falling onto her face, some landing in her eyes and mixing with her tears as they streamed down her cheeks.

Slowly, Latisha raised her hand, reaching out by feel to touch the man's face.

"Cli… Cli…" She squeezed the syllables from her throat. Having never spoken before, she couldn't form the rest of the word, managing only this single sound after much effort.

Clifford froze. "What did you say?"

Latisha opened her mouth, the air swirling in her throat, her lips and tongue unable to coordinate. After a long struggle, she managed to force out two clumsy, simple words. "...it's you."

Silence fell, broken only by the howling wind that whipped through the grass, seeming to blow away all of Clifford's anger. He sat beside her, stunned, his gaze fixed on her face. Even in the darkness, he stared as if trying to see her more clearly.
