The Day Silence Spoke novel Chapter 274

Latisha turned her head and saw a fire burning nearby. It was made mostly of fresh branches with only a few dry sticks, so the flames were small and produced a lot of smoke.

Clifford was tending to the branches, trying to make the fire burn brighter.

Latisha tried to sit up, but a hand on her shoulder gently pushed her back down.

"Don't move."

She paused, then looked down and realized neither of them was wearing clothes. They were covered only by a thin shirt. Their other clothes were draped over branches, forming a crude screen to their side, serving both to block the wind and to dry by the fire.

The cave was tiny, less than fifty square feet, so the clothes effectively blocked the opening, keeping most of the wind out.

But Latisha was still cold. Even with Clifford's body heat, she couldn't stop shivering.

Under Clifford's care, the fire finally grew larger, its bright flames illuminating the entire cave. He tossed the stick aside and looked down at her, as if trying to see into her very soul.

After a long moment, Clifford spoke. "You can talk now?"

Latisha blinked. She tried to open her mouth, unsure what to say. Aside from making sounds, she didn't really know how to speak.

"Hmm?" he pressed, his eyes narrowing with a hint of danger.

A knot of anxiety tightened in Latisha's chest. She curled into a ball and, after a long pause, managed to whisper one word: "Cold."

Clifford's brow relaxed. He pulled her tighter against him. "Is that better?"
