A man as proud as Clifford would never tolerate his possession turning against him and running to another. In his eyes, her actions were a betrayal of both body and soul. Any choice she made freely was a betrayal, a stain. The fact that he had followed her off that cliff was already the greatest mercy he could offer.
Latisha went downstairs and saw the meal growing cold on the table. She sat down silently and remained there all night. She eventually fell asleep, slumped over the table, and woke up to daylight.
Clifford hadn't come back.
Wordlessly, she picked up a fork and took a few bites of the cold food. Then she changed her clothes and took a cab to the office. It was the only place she might see him now.
When Latisha arrived, she noticed the atmosphere was off. The usual morning buzz was gone, replaced by a heavy, somber silence. No one seemed to be talking.
"Latisha, took some more time off, huh?" a colleague greeted her with a strained smile.
She nodded and went to her desk. She’d been away for so many days that she’d forgotten what she was working on. She remembered Rosalie was supposed to be training her.
But after half an hour, Rosalie still hadn't shown up. Her computer wasn't even on.
Latisha wrote a note on a piece of paper and took it to the colleague next to her.
The colleague read the note and said, "You don't know since you've been out, but there's a big personnel shake-up happening. A lot of people have been moved around. I think Rosalie resigned, but I'm not totally sure."
"A few people from our department were transferred too. We're supposed to be getting new people in the next few days."
Latisha looked around and realized her colleague was right. The department was half-empty. Besides her, only two other people were still at their desks.
