The Day Silence Spoke novel Chapter 308

Latisha nodded, rubbing the bump forming on her forehead as she got out of the car. Just as she took out her phone to order a new ride, someone got out of the van.

"Sorry, so sorry! We didn't mean to. Let's not get angry, we can settle this privately."

The voice was vaguely familiar. Latisha looked up and saw Mortimer Farley apologizing to the driver with a sheepish grin, already pulling out his phone to transfer money.

"I'll send you two thousand. That should cover the repairs and your lost time today, right?"

The driver, who had been furious, visibly relaxed. "Alright, fine. Just be more careful next time."

Mortimer sighed in relief and quickly sent the money, glancing over his shoulder every few seconds like a thief caught in the act. After the transfer was complete, he turned and spotted Latisha. His eyes lit up.

"Latisha!" Mortimer rushed over to her in a few strides and grabbed her arm. "Come with me, quickly."

Latisha was stunned. Before she could react, Mortimer was pulling her into the white van. She had barely found her seat when the van shot forward like an arrow, and she had to grip the seat in front of her to keep from falling.

"Don't be scared, I'm not going to sell you or anything," he said quickly. "There are people chasing me."

This only made Latisha more nervous. But when she looked back, she didn't see any pursuers. Instead, she saw the back of the van was filled with dog crates. Inside them were dozens of dogs, some of them whimpering softly.

She looked at Mortimer in confusion. Had this guy gotten himself into some other kind of trouble?
