The Day Silence Spoke novel Chapter 309

It was that time… the time she fell, and a young college student helped her up. The smile on that boy's face was identical to the one on Mortimer's now. Pure, bright, and full of life.

While Latisha was still lost in thought, Mortimer had already bent down and rummaged through his pocket, pulling out a Band-Aid. He carefully tore it open and placed it on the bump on her forehead.

"Sorry about that, for getting you hurt."

Latisha snapped back to reality and shifted away awkwardly. She signed, *It's okay.*

Mortimer watched her for a moment, then grinned. "You don't have anywhere to be, right? Come see the fur babies I've taken in."

Latisha hesitated, Clifford's past warnings echoing in her mind. But before she could refuse, Sean called from the driver's seat. "Hey, we're here."

Latisha looked up and realized they had driven to the outskirts of the city. The area was surrounded by desolate fields and hills. In front of them was a large iron gate.

Mortimer immediately jumped out of the van, opened the gate, and then hopped back in. Sean drove through. Inside, there were several simple, single-story structures. The moment they entered, they were greeted by a chorus of barking.

Latisha pressed her face to the window. The structures weren't houses but shelters, with rows of cages underneath, filled with cats and dogs. Dogs on the left, cats on the right. The animals, likely smelling Mortimer, started barking and meowing joyfully.

When the van stopped in the yard, Mortimer said to Latisha, "Just hang out here for a minute. I'm going to get these guys settled."

He and Sean then started moving the crates from the van into a large fenced-off enclosure. They opened the cages, and the dogs all tumbled out. Mortimer brought over a large bag of dog food and poured it into several bowls, and the dogs rushed over to eat.
