Meanwhile, at eleven in the morning, Caitlin arrived home. She hadn't called ahead. The butler, Scales, was astonished to see her. "Miss Caitlin! What are you doing back? I'll go tell the madam right away. She'll be overjoyed to know you're here."
"No, Scales," Caitlin said with a smile. "Just pretend you didn't see me."
Scales understood immediately. Caitlin wanted to surprise her family.
In the small courtyard, Keira, Hannah, Fortune, and Carey were playing cards. A gentle breeze rustled through the leaves, and their laughter filled the air. Monday was sleeping peacefully beside them.
It was a beautiful scene. Caitlin took out her phone and snapped a picture.
Suddenly, Monday shot up from his slumber as if struck by lightning. He sniffed the air, then bolted in her direction. "Woof! Woof! Woof!"
