Ransom watched the scene unfold with a frown. He was about to speak, but Rowena shot him a look, signaling him to stay quiet. Instead, she walked over to Ann and helped her up, her own eyes red. "Oh, Ann, I was never truly angry with you. You're just a child, after all. Thank you so much for bringing Ulysses back to me today. If it weren't for you, who knows what kind of person he might have run into!"
At that, Rowena began to cry softly.
Ann was stunned.
"What? Why was Rowena acting like this? Why wasn't she yelling or hitting me? This wasn't anything like I'd pictured. If Rowena didn't lash out, how was I supposed to make Gavin turn against her?"
Before Ann could process it, Rowena turned to Gavin. "Gavin, thanks to Ann, everything turned out all right today. Why don't we have her come live with us? It's not safe for a young woman to be living all alone."
Better to have Ann in the light where she could be watched than to let her cause trouble from the shadows. Rowena was going to keep a very close eye on her.
Besides, if she had thrown a fit and accused Ann of deliberately taking Ulysses, it would have only made Gavin resentful. She had no proof, after all. The police hadn't found any evidence either. But if she took the opposite approach, things would be different.
Gavin hadn't expected Rowena to suggest bringing Ann home again. He paused, then turned to Ann. "Ann, tell me the truth! Did you have anything to do with what happened to Ulysses?!"
Gavin wasn't a fool. He knew there was something strange about Ulysses's disappearance today. And Ransom was right. Ulysses had been perfectly fine until Ann showed up. Then, coincidentally, Ann was the one to bring him back.
Ann's eyes widened. She never imagined that Gavin, not Rowena, would be the first to doubt her. This was completely unexpected.
"It wasn't me, Dad, I swear it wasn't! If you don't believe me, you can ask Ulysses!" She looked down at the little boy. "Ulysses, tell Daddy, did I take you away?"
"No," Ulysses said, shaking his head while licking his lollipop. "Big sister bought me a lollipop. I like my big sister."
Rowena chimed in, "I believe Ann, too. Gavin, don't just accuse her without any reason! Ulysses is just a little boy; children don't lie. Since he said Ann had nothing to do with it, then she must be innocent."
Gavin rubbed his temples, a headache forming.
