Tammie Gonzales had imagined meeting C countless times before, but never like this.
Right now, all he could hear was a ringing in his ears, his mind completely blank.
How could this be happening?
Caitlin Kensington… was C?
C—the brightest, most dazzling star in the world of chess! The one who’d dominated international headlines, who’d crushed every rival on the global stage. A living legend.
How could C possibly be Caitlin?
He himself had fought tooth and nail just to claw his way to his current position. Caitlin was several years younger than him.
If Caitlin was really C, when had she started making a name for herself?
Tammie didn’t even dare to think about it.
Beside him, Ann Templeton was frozen in shock.
Just a second ago, she’d been scheming about how to get Caitlin thrown out of the gala, how to make her the laughingstock of the night.
But now—Caitlin had transformed into C before their very eyes.
It was unbelievable.
C could have been anyone—anyone except Caitlin.
After all, even the most talented people could only dream of becoming C’s protégé. What had Caitlin ever done to deserve being C?
Ann was nearly sick with jealousy.
Why?
Why did Caitlin always end up with everything good?
She was just a nobody from some backwater town. What gave her the right to have so many secret identities?
Compared to Caitlin, Tammie wasn’t even worth a tenth as much. Forest had only invited him to fill out the numbers, thinking Tammie seemed reliable enough.
Clearly, he’d been mistaken.
Tammie had absolutely no sense of tact. And Ann was even worse.
Turning to Caitlin, Forest’s tone turned nervous, almost pleading. “Ms. C, you’re far too gracious to be bothered by people like this. Please forgive their ignorance.”
He glanced back at Tammie and Ann, his voice cold and sharp. “Mr. Gonzales, Miss Templeton, I expect you both to apologize to Ms. C—right now.”
Apologize?
To Caitlin?
Tammie’s eyes widened in disbelief.
He was Caitlin’s older cousin. Since when did a big brother have to apologize to his little cousin?
