“Sweetie.”
A burst of laughter followed.
“That doesn’t sound like a boy’s nickname at all.”
“If anything, it’s more like something you’d call an adorable little girl.”
“It just doesn’t suit Gordon in the slightest.”
“Grandma, you’re a genius! How on earth did you come up with such a nickname for Uncle Gordon?” Skyler asked, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
Alaina grinned and explained, “Your uncle was always sick as a child—coughs, fevers, you name it. It felt like every other day, he caught something new. Your grandpa got so worried, he went to see Father Benedict for advice. The priest said that fate hadn’t blessed our family with a son, so to ward off misfortune, we had to give your uncle a girlish nickname and use it until he turned ten. On top of that, your uncle had an insatiable sweet tooth as a kid, so that’s how he ended up with ‘Sweetie’ as his nickname.”
Sometimes, life really does work in mysterious ways.
Ever since they started calling him Sweetie, Gordon—who used to be so frail—grew up strong as an ox. After that, he hardly ever got sick again.
Skyler nodded in understanding. “So that’s the story! No wonder I kept hearing Grandma mumbling about ‘Sweetie’—I always thought it was some cousin’s nickname!”
She never would have guessed it was Uncle Gordon’s.
With that, Skyler announced, “Mom, I’m going to look for Uncle Gordon.”
“Oh, you!” Alaina sighed, clearly exasperated. “Didn’t I just tell you not to be so insensitive? For all you know, your uncle is hiding out in his room, chatting with a girl!”
Skyler waved it off with a cheerful grin. “Don’t worry, Mom! Uncle Gordon’s not the type to be whispering sweet nothings in secret. That’s just not his style.” With that, she disappeared around the corner toward the elevator.
Inside the study, Gordon sat at his desk, video-chatting with Caitlin.
“I miss you, Catie. When are you coming home?” His voice was soft, tinged with longing.
Gordon had never been the type to hide his feelings for Caitlin. He told her he loved her, told her he missed her—always straightforward, never holding anything back.
Anyone who knew Gordon only as the formidable Master Ninth of the Sylvester family—the ruthless, sharp-eyed businessman who dominated the corporate world—would never believe their eyes if they saw him now: a lovesick man, openly speaking from the heart to the woman he adored.
Even Gordon himself sometimes found it hard to believe. He’d always thought he could keep his feelings for Caitlin under control. But now, he realized some things simply couldn’t be hidden.
For Caitlin, he was willing to break every rule he’d ever set for himself.
Caitlin leaned her chin into her palm, smiling at him through the screen. “Soon—just two more days, and I’ll be back.”
