As Celia opened the file, a flicker of disdain crossed Jennifer's eyes.
So much for trust.
It was all a lie.
If Celia truly trusted her, she wouldn't be looking at that report.
This single act was an insult to their friendship.
How pathetic.
As Celia read, she noticed something that made her frown. She looked up at Jennifer. "You met with Griffin today?"
"Yes," Jennifer confirmed.
"Why did you meet with Griffin?" Celia asked, her tone sharp.
If she remembered correctly, Griffin was Dr. Smith's student and now his assistant.
Smith had been after the prescription for a while.
And now, Jennifer had met with his assistant—right after being in her room.
It was impossible not to be suspicious.
Jennifer was a masterful actress, her face showing no hint of deceit. "Griffin is from my hometown. Griffin happened to be in The Capital on business, so we arranged to have coffee together."
"Just coffee?" Celia's eyes narrowed.
Jennifer bit her lip, a look of reluctance on her face, then sighed. "Actually, Griffin is Director Smith's student now. Well, Griffin asked to meet not just to catch up, but also to ask for a favor."
"What favor?" Celia pressed, her instincts telling her this was serious.
Jennifer moistened her lips. "Griffin heard you've become close with Miss Gonzales and wanted me to ask you to arrange a meeting between Director Smith and Miss Gonzales. But I'm just your bodyguard, and I already knew you'd said Miss Gonzales didn't want to see him. So, I had to refuse."
Her explanation sounded sincere, but to Celia, it was full of holes.
If that was all it was, why would she meet Griffin twice in one day?
Celia looked directly at Jennifer, her gaze so intense it felt as if it could see right through her. "Jennifer, you took the prescription, didn't you? You gave it to Griffin!"
Though she hated to suspect her, all the evidence pointed to Jennifer.
"It wasn't me." Jennifer shook her head, her eyes welling with tears. Her face was a mask of hurt and disbelief. "Miss Palmer, how could you suspect me? If I had really taken it, I could have easily hidden my movements. Why would I volunteer my exact whereabouts?"
"Stop acting. If it wasn't you, who else could it be? And do you really think you could hide your movements from me?" Celia's voice was filled with disappointment. "Jennifer, we grew up together. I thought of you as family. Why would you do this to me?"
Celia was truly, deeply disappointed.
She couldn't understand what she had ever done to deserve this from Jennifer.
Family?
*Hah!*
Celia dared to say she thought of her as family.
That she had wrongly accused Jennifer?
Jennifer watched Celia's expression closely. Then, with a sudden movement, she dropped to her knees. "Miss Palmer, you are the master, and I am the servant," she cried, her voice filled with anguish. "If you say I am right, then I am right. If you say I am wrong, then I am wrong."
"You believe I stole the prescription? Fine. I admit it."
"I hope this is the answer you wanted."
"Now, do with me what you will. I won't complain."
It was a performance of victimhood, a calculated retreat.
Jennifer knew Celia too well.
She knew exactly how to quell her suspicion and anger.
As expected, Celia froze, a look of guilt washing over her face. She rushed forward and pulled Jennifer to her feet, her own eyes red. "Jennifer, I'm so sorry. I was just so worried. I shouldn't have accused you."
"I know you're not that kind of person. You didn't take the prescription."
Celia was filled with remorse.
Jennifer had grown up with her. How could she have doubted her so easily?
It was an insult to their friendship.
Jennifer's eyes were swollen from crying. She sniffled and looked at Celia. "I know it wasn't you who suspected me. It was Miss Gonzales, wasn't it?"
