"Every time I ask you for money, I have to grovel like a dog. I'm not crying, so what are you crying about?"
In Karla's mind, thirty million was nothing to Amanda. It wasn't like she was asking for her life.
"By the way," Karla added, a sly look on her face, "I think I saw your niece at the airport last time."
Amanda's face went white. "What did you say?!"
She only had one niece.
Caitlin Kensington.
Karla was a lunatic. She was crazy enough to approach Caitlin.
Karla's eyes narrowed. "I have to say, your niece looks just like her mother. That face… like something out of a painting. A true descendant of Neon Spire's greatest beauty."
In truth, the moment Karla saw Caitlin, she had recognized the baby she'd once seen in a crib. It was unmistakable. Caitlin was the spitting image of Carey Richards, but she also had Stuart Gonzales's strong features—a classic, striking beauty.
Amanda lost her composure completely, grabbing Karla by the collar. "You really are insane! You actually went near that little bitch! Do you have any idea what will happen to both of us if she finds out anything?"
"Calling your own niece a little bitch?" Though Amanda was terrified, Karla remained calm, her face a mask of contempt. "Tsk, tsk. What a wonderful aunt you are. Then again, coming from you, I'm not surprised."
She then added, "Relax. I recognized her as a Gonzales right away, but she had no idea who I was."
"Are you sure she didn't recognize you?" Amanda demanded.
"Positive." Karla nodded, pulling out another cigarette. "She's just a naive little girl, not some detective. What could she possibly figure out?"
Even if Caitlin were a detective, she wouldn't waste time being suspicious of every stranger she met. People cross paths with hundreds of strangers every day.
Amanda let out a breath of relief.
She was right. Caitlin was just a girl. What could she possibly suspect?
Karla blew out a cloud of smoke. "So, we've come full circle. Are you going to give me the money or not? Because if you don't, I can't survive. And if I can't survive, I'm going to find Keira!"
Amanda's head was pounding. It was always the same threat.
And it always worked.
*Patience.*
She just had to hold on a little longer. Stuart was on his last legs. Once he was gone, the Gonzales family would belong to her and her daughter. If Karla came around then, she would have nothing to fear.
Taking a deep breath, Amanda looked at Karla. "Is this really the last time?"
"Yes," Karla nodded firmly. "The absolute last time."
Almost immediately, a video call came through from M.
Caitlin answered.
A young man in a white t-shirt appeared on the screen. He was in his late twenties, with sharp, chiseled features and an air of refined confidence—the kind of guy who would make girls stop and stare on the street.
This was M.
Weston Miller.
"Boss Caitlin!" he exclaimed the moment the call connected. "I'm telling you, the first person Karla met after landing in The Capital was Amanda. If there's nothing going on between those two, I'll eat my damn keyboard!"
Caitlin calmly put on her headset, her right hand on her mouse while her left flew across the keyboard. "Can you get Karla's bank statements right now?"
The first thing Karla did was meet Amanda. There had to be a transaction. Karla was Marcia's sister, and Caitlin's gut told her there was a dark secret between her and Amanda. Marcia was connected to what happened all those years ago, and that meant Karla was too.
"Of course."
Only then did Weston really look at Caitlin on the screen. He paused. "Wow. It's only been a year, but you've changed so much."
"How so?" Caitlin didn't look up, her focus split between the call and her work.
Weston narrowed his eyes. "How do I put it? Hmm… You're more like your old self."

So happy for Carey, the reunion with her family is touching. Can we read more of Caitlin and Gordon? Readers are forgetting that Caitlin has a boyfriend by the way. Is it normal for their relationship to be erased in the storyline?...
Update please......
But where is Gordon?...
Great story, great author!...
