Tammie's trust in Ann was absolute. Even though her reputation in The Capital was in tatters, in his mind, she was still a paragon of innocence. So, when Benedict mentioned the hacker J, his first thought was of clearing Ann's name.
Benedict frowned and turned to him. "Have you considered what you'll do if the person who stole the designs turns out to be Ann? How will you face Lindy then?"
It was a human life. Though Lindy had jumped herself, would she have done it if she hadn't been falsely accused by Tammie? He was, in a way, an indirect accomplice to her death. The thought that an innocent life had been lost over their designs left a bitter taste in Benedict's mouth. His own mother was about Lindy's age. He couldn't imagine the grief Lindy's children must be feeling.
What level of despair would drive a person to prove their innocence with death? And yet, her death hadn't led to any remorse from Tammie; instead, it had only convinced him she was guilty. The injustice of it all was suffocating.
"It won't be," Tammie said, his conviction unshaken. "I trust Ann. There is no way she stole the designs. I believe in her." In a moment like this, he had to stand by his family. To doubt her and trust an outsider would be a betrayal of everything Ann meant to him.
"You have that much faith in her?" Benedict rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on.
"Yes, I do," Tammie insisted. "Benedict, you keep saying Ann stole the designs, but how many thieves do you know who stick around after the crime? Ann is still living here! And when I first suspected Lindy, her reaction was the same as yours. She thought I was making a mistake."
