Warming to her topic, Old Mrs. Somerset pressed on. "Beatrice, Miss Sylvester, you mustn't be fooled by that divorced woman. A person like her has no right to be with Master Ninth."
Her words hung in the air, and Old Mrs. Somerset felt a thrill of excitement.
She imagined Beatrice and Alaina were utterly shocked. And grateful to her, of course.
If it weren't for her, they would still be completely in the dark.
Any moment now, the Somersets would be welcomed as honored friends of the Sylvesters, and she would become Beatrice's trusted confidante.
She never thought that at her age, she'd become a peer of someone like Beatrice.
It was a tremendous honor.
As for that shameless Caitlin, she'd be kicked to the curb where she belonged!
Beatrice and Alaina were indeed shocked, but not in the way Old Mrs. Somerset had anticipated.
The pleasant expressions on their faces shifted instantly to thunderous clouds of rage.
Seeing this rapid change, Old Mrs. Somerset became even more smug.
She knew it. Beatrice would never allow a divorced woman to marry into the Sylvester family.
The anger on their faces was proof enough of how furious they were.
Excellent!
This was truly excellent.
Seeing Beatrice and Alaina's darkening expressions, Old Mrs. Somerset decided to add more fuel to the fire. Her own face twisted into a venomous sneer, like a snake emerging from a drainpipe. "That bitch's character is utter filth—"
SLAP!
Before she could finish the sentence, Beatrice's hand cracked across her face.
Beatrice was incandescent with rage. She pointed a trembling finger at the woman. "You're the tramp! Your whole damn family are tramps! Let me make something clear to you: Freya is irreplaceable to me! It would be the greatest honor for our family if she became my daughter-in-law. It is not your place, you vile old woman, to speak ill of her!"
Beatrice had never used such foul language in her life.
How could this be happening?
This was nothing like she had imagined.
Instead of blaming Caitlin for her past marriage, they were defending her, directing all their fury at her.
Could it be that they didn't care about Caitlin's past marriage at all?
Impossible! That was simply impossible.
No parents in the world would willingly let their son marry someone's leftovers.
Old Mrs. Somerset looked up, bewildered. "Beatrice, Miss Sylvester, I'm not lying! She really was divorced! If you don't believe me, you can check the records at city hall!"
City hall would prove her right!
She concluded they were only defending Caitlin because they didn't believe it was true.

So happy for Carey, the reunion with her family is touching. Can we read more of Caitlin and Gordon? Readers are forgetting that Caitlin has a boyfriend by the way. Is it normal for their relationship to be erased in the storyline?...
Update please......
But where is Gordon?...
Great story, great author!...
