Fearing it would upset Caitlin, the Gonzales family didn't tell her about Old Mrs. Somerset's earlier behavior.
So, when Caitlin heard Old Mrs. Somerset’s words, she was merely confused. She remained polite. "Mrs. Somerset, whatever misunderstanding we have can wait. That swimming ring in your hands could save a child's life. Could you please just lend it to me?"
Old Mrs. Somerset just stared at Caitlin, her eyes filled with scorn.
A child? Caitlin was saying a child had fallen into Celestial Lake?
Impossible. The Gonzales family didn't have any young children.
Besides, if it really were some random child unrelated to the Gonzales family, would Caitlin be so desperate to borrow a swimming ring?
So, it had to be Stuart who fell in. Or that old matriarch of the Gonzales family.
Whoever it was, the Gonzales family was going to be holding a funeral soon!
At this thought, a vicious glint flashed in Old Mrs. Somerset's eyes.
"No," she said, a cruel smile twisting her lips. "I'd rather throw this swimming ring away than lend it to you!"
Caitlin tried to reason with her. "It's not for me, it's for the child in the water. If you don't help, that child could drown!"
The golden window for a drowning rescue is only four to six minutes, and the child had already been in the water for several of them. Every second they wasted now was a second that decided whether the child would live or die.
"If he drowns, he drowns. What's it got to do with me?" Old Mrs. Somerset scoffed.
So what if it really was a child in Celestial Lake?
Caitlin's brow furrowed. She couldn't believe Old Mrs. Somerset could be so callous, so dismissive of a human life.
When Caitlin had run over to borrow the swimming ring, a few other onlookers had followed her. Hearing Old Mrs. Somerset's refusal, one of them quickly spoke up. "Ma'am, saving a life is the noblest thing you can do. If you won't lend the ring to this young lady, then please, lend it to me! That poor kid is in real danger!"
Others chimed in. "Yes, that's right, we have to save the child! Celestial Lake is too deep for any of us to just jump in. Right now, that swimming ring you're holding is the only thing that can save him!"
"A child's life affects an entire family, ma'am. Please, just let us use the swimming ring!"
As the crowd grew, Old Mrs. Somerset clutched the swimming ring tighter. From the murmurs, she began to realize it might not be a member of the Gonzales family in the water after all. Caitlin could lie, but she couldn't make all these people lie with her.
But so what if it wasn't a Gonzales? So what if it was just some kid? People died every day. What was one more? He could keep her son company on his way to hell.
Jeremiah had been sentenced to death just a few days ago. The thought of another child dying alongside her precious son was actually comforting to Old Mrs. Somerset. Her son had at least lived to be over thirty. This child was probably barely a teenager. Good, very good.
A pity it was only one child. It would be better if a few more had fallen in.
"What?" Old Mrs. Somerset glared at the crowd. "You think you can guilt-trip me just because there are more of you? I don't play that game! I'll say it one more time: this is my swimming ring, and I'm not lending it to anyone!"
"You're a wicked old hag! That was a life, for God's sake! How could you just stand by and watch someone die?"
"She's pure evil! Doesn't she have children of her own?"
"Someone like that? If she does have kids, I bet they're cursed to die young!"
*Die young?*
The words struck a nerve. Old Mrs. Somerset's expression twisted into a mask of fury. "You're the one who'll die young! Your whole family will die young! I didn't help, so what? What are you going to do, call the cops and have me arrested?"
She spat, "Even the law can't touch me. What makes you think you can?"
The onlookers were speechless with fury. No one could have imagined a heart could be so thoroughly black.
Caitlin picked up the deflated ring and tried to blow into the valve, but after several long breaths, it remained stubbornly flat.
"Here, young lady," a bystander said, rushing forward with an air pump. "Try this! It's my son's pump for his balloons, see if it works!"
Caitlin took it, but the nozzle didn't fit. It was useless.
Someone else managed to find a long wooden pole, trying to extend it out over the water, but it was too short to reach.

So happy for Carey, the reunion with her family is touching. Can we read more of Caitlin and Gordon? Readers are forgetting that Caitlin has a boyfriend by the way. Is it normal for their relationship to be erased in the storyline?...
Update please......
