Hearing that last sentence, Keeley looked up at Trevor, his eyes wide with disbelief.
Before he could react, Floy chimed in, "Trevor's right. You believe everything they say. If you're not an idiot, what are you? That was a million dollars! A whole million! And now it's all gone to that couple, and we didn't even get a whiff of it."
With that, Floy snatched the half-eaten sandwich from Keeley's hand in disgust. "The money's all gone. Why are you still eating? Don't eat! You don't deserve to eat. You don't even deserve to be breathing!"
Keeley sat there, frozen, staring at his eldest nephew and his wife, a profound chill spreading through his heart. He had thought they were the good ones. He never imagined... they were all cut from the same cloth.
Caitlin had been right. Their earlier show of devotion was all for the money.
Keeley looked at Trevor and Floy, his voice raspy. "Trevor, Floy, don't forget, I gave you two million dollars! You promised to take care of me! You can't go back on your word now!"
Two million! Surely that was enough to support a lonely old man like him.
No one could know the depth of Keeley's regret at that moment. He regretted not listening to Caitlin's advice.
"Two million is nothing! Trevor is your nephew, he should have inherited that money anyway! Now Sloan is the one who got the most. If anyone should be taking care of you, it's him, not us! Go on, get out! Get out of here right now!" With that, Floy started pushing Keeley towards the door.
