The Divorce Prescription (Celina and Adam) novel Chapter 939

Justin looked at Hailey, a cold smirk on his lips. "Ms. Hailey, do you have no shame? Jonah was disfigured because of you, and now you have the audacity to stand here and ask about it? Don't even try to pretend you weren't involved."

Hailey was completely thrown off. "What are you talking about? I had nothing to do with Jonah's injuries!"

Justin let out a sharp, bitter scoff.

But Hailey didn't back down. "If you're making accusations like this, then you must have some kind of proof. So tell me, what exactly happened three years ago?"

Jonah had never shared the full story with her, but now, she needed to know the truth.

"Do you really want to know, Ms. Hailey? Fine. Three years ago, Jonah went undercover. It nearly cost him his life. When he finally returned, he rushed to find you, only to walk in on you with Ewan. The two of you were practically engaged."

What?

Hailey felt the blood drain from her face.

She had never been involved with Ewan like that, let alone get engaged to him.

"Jonah was barely alive outside your house that night," Justin continued. "Out of nowhere, a group of men grabbed him and forced him into a car.

"They threw acid in his face, disfiguring him horribly. And as if that wasn't enough, they ensured the car went over the cliff with him inside, leaving him to die."

Hailey was stunned. She had no idea Jonah had been through such a life-or-death experience three years ago. He had never said a word about it.

"Who did this to him? Who could be so cruel? Did you ever find out who was behind it?" she asked.

Justin stared at her, his lips curling into a sneer. "Damn, Ms. Hailey, you really know how to put on a show."

What exactly was he implying?

A sudden, horrifying thought gripped Hailey. Her face went pale as she stared at Justin. "You don't actually think I was the one who ordered the attack on Jonah, do you?"

"It was you. Those men told Jonah you were the one who sent them. You thought he was a nuisance, so you wanted him dead—gone from this world!"

Hailey widened her eyes in disbelief. The accusation was ludicrous. The thought of doing something so monstrous felt completely foreign to her.

But in an instant of clarity, everything clicked—why Justin had always harbored such hatred for her, and why Jonah had kept the reason behind his disfigurement a secret.

She raised the cup to her lips, ready to take a sip.

Justin's eyes stayed fixed on her. He knew the coffee was laced with drugs. All he needed was for her to drink it.

But just as the cup touched her lips, Hailey suddenly frowned.

Justin's face tightened the moment she set the cup down.

"Why aren't you drinking your coffee?" he asked.

"I'm just not in the mood," Hailey replied, her brow still furrowed.

She was pregnant now—caffeine was off-limits.

Justin's composure cracked. He hadn't seen this coming.

He leaned in and insisted, "I ordered that coffee specifically for you. Are you seriously turning it down just to get back at me?"
