"What do you think?" Lucy tossed the proposal aside, not answering directly.
Jules hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Lucy, I heard Kingsley got shot. Honestly, a man like him really isn't suited for a peaceful life."
"It has nothing to do with me." Lucy didn't look up, her fingers continuing to slide across the drawing tablet, her tone calm as if discussing a stranger.
Hearing this answer, the weight in Jules's chest lifted quietly. He probed further. "Actually, I feel I'm quite suited for it. If you ever get tired of being alone, I can share the burden anytime."
"Can being alone be tiring?" Lucy finally looked up, amusement in her eyes. "Isn't it when there are two people that things get exhausting?"
She shifted the topic playfully. "Mr. Holt, don't tell me... you've never been in a relationship?"
As if poked in a sore spot, a trace of awkwardness flashed across Jules's face. He quickly defended himself. "Who says? I dated in university. Twice, actually."
Lucy didn't expose him. She simply nodded and pulled the conversation back to work. "I'll take the project. I have drawings to revise, so I can't chat right now."
Kingsley was in his office conducting a video conference with his team back home. Outside, Peter was about to knock when the secretary stopped him. "Mr. Sherwood is in a meeting; he's not to be disturbed."
Peter nodded, saying "I won't disturb him," but pushed the door open and walked right in anyway.
