There was no way he was letting her head to the courtyard alone. He had a good idea of exactly what Wendy was planning, and from the way Eliza had been moving these past few days, it was clear she had been investigating Wendy in Westbrook. Wendy never tolerated hidden threats.

“I need to make sure you’re safe,” Cramer said. “You’re the Sue family’s daughter. If something happens to you at my handover banquet, they won’t go after Wendy – they’ll come for me.”

Eliza opened her mouth, then closed it again. As much as she hated to admit it, he had a point.

“But my friend is still in the courtyard. Wendy won’t let him go.”

“Don’t worry. No one comes to harm on my turf.”

He added, “I’ve already sent my people to the courtyard. Your friend will be fine.”

That reassured her a little. In moments like this, the enemy of her enemy really was her friend.

The hotel manager rushed over. “Sir, the main power’s been fixed.”

In an instant, the lights blazed back on.

Eliza’s first instinct was to run back for Nolan, but Cramer stopped her. “My people are already there. You wait in the car.”

“I want to see for myself.”

“If Wendy hurts you, the blame falls on me.”

He didn’t give her a choice, ordering his men to escort her to the car.

At that, Wendy’s frown deepened. This evening had been meant to end both Eliza and Nolan. She might never get such a perfect opportunity again.

“She’s in no danger. I’ve had her protected,” Cramer said. “You can rest easy.”

Nolan’s entire focus was on her. Cramer had heard the rumors back in Westbrook but never thought much of them – surely a man of Nolan’s power wouldn’t travel overseas for a woman. But looking at him now, it was clear Eliza was his treasure.

“Thank you,” Nolan said shortly, then ordered his people to withdraw.

Finding her, making sure she was safe and unharmed – that was all that mattered.
