Brandon grinned proudly. “I know the owner here-I told him to comp your meal.”
The Shane family’s business wasn’t a massive empire, but as a prominent local enterprise in Javerton, they had their fair share of influence and connections. Brandon had been hoping to subtly flaunt their wealth to help his son win Estella over more quickly.
After all, he’d relied on “financial charm” to win over many of his ex-wives.
But Winson, afraid his father might scare Estella off, quickly stepped in. “Dad, Estella and I have some things to talk about. You should get going.”
Brandon looked a little disappointed at being cut off, but in the end, he respected his son’s wishes.
“Fine, I’ll leave you kids to it. Stop by the house sometime—I’ll have your mom cook something good for you.”
With that, he reluctantly left.
Winson let out a breath of relief once his dad was gone.
“My father’s always like that. Don’t mind him,” he said with a sheepish smile.
Estella just offered a small smile in response.
They finished their meal and were just about to leave when a pale, haggard woman suddenly rushed over and clutched Winson’s arm, bursting into tears.
“Winson! I finally found you! Please, save our child!”
Winson’s face changed the moment he recognized her.
“Britney? What are you doing here?”
She was one of his many ex-girlfriends-he honestly couldn’t remember which one.
Casting a worried glance at Estella, he quickly explained, “We broke up a long time ago, Estella. Don’t misunderstand.”
But Estella didn’t feel anything. She had no stake in Winson’s past. Whatever mess he had with his exes, it wasn’t her concern.
Winson, however, felt a pang when he saw her indifferent expression.

He tried to shake Britney off, but she was clearly emotional.

“Winson, did you forget about me already? We have a child! He’s already two years old! I haven’t seen him since the day he was born. I miss him so much. Please, let me see my baby!”
Winson’s expression darkened in confusion. “What are you talking about? What child?”
He always took precautions-there was no way he’d have a kid.
Britney’s face twisted in pain at his cold dismissal.
Then she turned to Estella.
She lunged forward and grabbed Estella’s wrist tightly. “Please, miss, I’m begging you! We have a child! Please leave Winson. Let us be a family again!”
Estella winced as Britney’s nails dug into her skin, leaving scratches. She tried to pull away. “Let go.”
But Britney didn’t budge. Her eyes locked on Estella’s with an intensity that bordered on unhinged.
Winson rushed forward, panicked. “Britney! Let go of her!”
But the moment she saw Winson protect Estella, Britney’s eyes welled up with tears again.
She had once been loved by Winson-intensely. But just as quickly, he’d grown cold and cut her off.
Eventually, she realized their relationship had only ever been a game to him.
Still, she couldn’t let go.
That’s why, when she found out she was pregnant, she clung to a fragile hope.
Maybe, if she gave birth, he’d come back.
Maybe he’d want a family, settle down, love her for real.
She bet everything on that child.
But in the end, she lost everything.
Winson never came back.
And Britney refused to accept it.

She stared at Estella with a growing hatred. In her mind, it was always women like this-these “other women”-who stole Winson away.
Suddenly, her gaze turned manic.
She snatched a steak knife from a nearby table and lunged at Estella’s chest.
If Estella were gone, no one could take Winson away from her.
Caught off guard by the sudden attack, Estella tried to dodge, but Britney was too fast. There wasn’t enough time.
In that split second, a figure hurled himself in front of her, shielding her with his body.
Estella froze, wide-eyed, staring at Britney’s crazed face as blood seeped into her palm.
She trembled violently, reaching out with shaking hands to steady the man who had protected her.
He released her slowly.
And only then did she see his face.
Nathaniel.
He had thrown himself into the blade for her.
All past grudges forgotten in the moment, Estella pulled out her phone with trembling fingers and dialed 911.
Nathaniel had taken the knife in the back. His face was pale from pain, but when he saw her frightened, worried expression, he still managed a faint smile.
