“You forget,” Isaac said calmly, “back then, you were the one toying with everyone. How many men fell for you? Nathaniel was no exception.”
“Men are drawn to the women they can’t have–dangerous, mysterious ones. Not the ones who are loyal and self–sacrificing.”
Isaac, a seasoned veteran in matters of love, saw through it all with ease.
Isabelle silently admitted he was right. At the root of it, she had loved too deeply. That was why she lost herself–why she ended up so afraid of losing.
Her brother was too good at this.
Suddenly, an idea struck her. She looked up at Isaac and said, “Why don’t you go after Estella? You’re good–looking, rich, and you’ve never lost in love before, right?”
“If Estella becomes my sister–in–law, Nathaniel will have no choice but to give up.”
Isaac found the suggestion ridiculous. “What are you even saying? You think I’d go pursue a woman just for something this absurd?”
Isabelle pouted. “Come on, just help me. If you can make Estella fall for you, I won’t have to worry about her and Nathaniel anymore.”
Isaac recalled the elegant curve of Estella’s face he’d seen earlier. He hesitated for a moment. “I’ll think about it. But first, let’s get you home, alright?”
Isabelle had been exhausted from caring for Nathaniel the past few days. And after hearing her brother out, she finally nodded. “Okay.”
The next day, Estella arrived at work and was surprised to see Winson waiting by the elevator.
She assumed he was there to see her, but he only nodded in greeting and said nothing.
They entered the elevator together in silence.
When Winson pressed the button for Luminary Partners & Co., Estella realized he was there to see Jonathan.
She quickly guessed it had to be about Britney’s case.
“How’s the case going?” she asked.

Winson’s expression turned bitter. “The Hartwell family paid a doctor to claim Britney’s psychiatric evaluation is invalid. If it goes through, she might be facing a heavy sentence.”
“Can’t you get a second opinion?” Estella frowned.
“We tried. But the Monroe family and Hartwell family are working together. The Shane family can’t compete with them. That’s why I came to ask Mr. Jonathan if there’s a way to reduce her
sentence…”
“I’ll go with you.”
They entered the office at Luminary. Jonathan looked up from his desk.
“You here to see me?” he said to Estella. “Take a seat.”
He had his assistant bring her a glass of water, but otherwise ignored Winson completely.
Feeling awkward, Winson eventually said, “Mr. Jonathan, I’m here to ask for your help…”
“I’m not taking Britney’s case,” Jonathan cut him off.
“If it’s a matter of money…” Winson started.
Estella stepped in. “Mr. Jonathan, I know Britney hurt me and you’re probably upset. But she does have depression. I think we should at least reconsider-”
Jonathan’s tone softened toward her. “That’s not the reason.”
Estella looked puzzled.
Winson hesitated. “Are you worried about crossing the Monroe and Hartwell families?”
Jonathan gave him a cold glance. “The Monroe family and the Hartwells? I don’t take them seriously.”
“Then why?” Estella pressed.
Jonathan pulled out a file and handed it to them.
“I looked into Britney. She was brought back to Javerton by someone Nathaniel hired. On top of that, the day she was arrested, her parents‘ bank account received three million–from Nathaniel’s personal account.”
Estella and Winson both froze.
“So it was all Nathaniel’s plan?”

Estella processed the information quickly.
Nathaniel had two goals. One, to stop Winson from pursuing her. Two, to manipulate Britney into a ‘damsel–turned–monster‘ scenario–staging a heroic rescue so Estella would feel guilty
and indebted.
Naturally, he couldn’t risk Britney talking afterward. He had to make sure she stayed locked up.
A chill spread through Estella’s body.
She’d thought Nathaniel had changed. That he’d truly risked his life for her.
But in the end, he was still calculating her every move.
Winson was stunned. “So Britney wasn’t just a victim of her mental illness? Nathaniel up to it?”
put her
Jonathan said flatly, “She wanted to hurt Estella. But she wasn’t acting alone. Nathaniel’s manipulation played a role. That makes her legally responsible for the attack. I can’t take this
case.”
Neither Estella nor Winson said a word.
Jonathan looked at Estella. “You should stay away from Nathaniel for now. He’s good at hiding his intentions and playing on your guilt. I’m worried he’ll hurt you again.”
Estella nodded slowly. “Thank you… for the warning.”
