Chapter 172 You’ll Never Have Her Again
He paused, then landed another punch squarely on Nathaniel.
Nathaniel was about to strike back when Jonathan’s voice cut coldly through the air:

“You realize you provoked that kidnapper, almost got Estella killed, don’t you? You never once put her safety first.”
Nathaniel froze. His hand fell uselessly to his side, heavy with fatigue. “I thought the call was fake…”
“Even if it was fake, so what?”
Jonathan’s laugh was sharp, merciless. “He wanted money, you should’ve given him money. Why gamble with Estella’s life?”
If that call had come to Jonathan, he wouldn’t have hesitated to pay. Money was nothing compared to Estella’s life.
Jonathan finished, gave Nathaniel one last contemptuous look, and turned to leave.
But Nathaniel’s voice suddenly roared after him, ragged with fury:
“Even if Estella ends up with you, it’ll only be out of gratitude ever truly loved is me!”
Jonathan didn’t turn back. His tone was glacial.

“Then let me spell it out for you. Even if that were true, I don’t care. And Nathaniel remember this. Estella might accept anyone in this world… anyone but you.”
It was as if Nathaniel’s chest had been ripped open, his heart torn raw and bleeding.
Jonathan was right. Estella would never take him back.
But still, he couldn’t let her

And in that moment, regret slammed into him like a blade. Why, when the kidnapper had called, had he been so quick to sneer, to refuse? Why hadn’t he thrown money at the problem and gotten Estella out right away?
If he had saved her himself, would things be different now…

Jonathan and Estella stayed in the hospital for a full week before returning to Javerton.

Because she’d been away from work so long, Estella didn’t rest once she got back. She threw herself straight into managing the art center.
She quickly discovered discrepancies in the accounts. Calling the accountant over, she asked, “Cecelia, I was in Sinovia this past week – why are there so many new debts in the books?”
They were all listed as various promotional expenses.
Not a single entry was less than thirty thousand. In total, over three hundred thousand had
gone out.
Cecelia shifted uncomfortably. “Wilson brought the bills to me. He said you’d already signed off. But because the amounts were large and we didn’t have the cash on hand, I signed off on IOUS.”
Estella’s brows knit. She immediately summoned Wilson.
Wilson defended himself quickly. “Those were all necessary promotions. You know the saying, even fine wine needs advertising. Our center doesn’t have enough exposure, that’s why our clientele’s so small.”
—
Estella cut him off. “And the results? I checked the numbers our orders didn’t increase this week at all.”
Wilson floundered. “That kind of thing doesn’t show overnight. Advertising takes time. You’ve got to look at the long run.”
Estella’s laugh was sharp, humorless. “You’ve got guts, Wilson. You didn’t even bother asking me before forging my signature and signing those contracts. If your gamble had worked, maybe I’d let you off once. But it didn’t. Which means you’re taking responsibility.”
Wilson stammered, “I just wanted to help the center. And you were in Sinovia, you were injured, I didn’t want you stressing about things here—”
“Wilson, remember your place. You’re just an assistant. You are not the boss.”
Estella’s face was ice.
If he hadn’t been her cousin, she would’ve already called the police.
Selene and she had only been gone a short while, and Wilson had nearly signed the center away. If she’d stayed in Sinovia any longer, would there have even been an art center left to
return to?
“From this moment on, you’re fired. And since you cost me hundreds of thousands, you won’t

see a paycheck this month either.”
Her voice was like steel.
“As for that three hundred thousand, I’ll be taking it from your father.”
Her instincts told her the money hadn’t gone to promotion at all elsewhere.

Wilson had funneled it
Wilson panicked. “You can’t do this! I just made a bad call, that’s all. How can you fire me over one mistake, and drag my dad into it too?”
Estella sneered. “My mother may spoil you. I don’t. Do you really believe her nonsense — I’d hand my art center over to you? What kind of ridiculous dream are you living in? And forged my signature, Wilson. Do you know what kind of crime that is? Do you want me to hand you over to the police for a nice cup of tea?”

Wilson’s face flushed with anger. “You’re just a woman. You think you can handle a business like this? My mom and your mom are sisters – if you pass the center to me, it stays in the family! Better that than when you get married someday, your husband swoops in and takes everything. With me running things, you can relax, go find yourself a good match, and I’ll keep the money coming in. Then you’ll always have your family behind you!”
Estella almost laughed at the twisted logic.
“You think being born a man gives you the right to steal my money and my work without a shred of guilt?”
Her eyes were razor sharp.

“You’re not my brother. You’re just my cousin. Which means you’re not family — you’re an outsider. Understand? If you’ve got any sense left, you’ll run home to your father and get that money back. Otherwise…”
