Greg had always been the one admired, the one held up in Selene’s careful hands. To hear her voice cut so sharp, to feel her words slice clean through the past–it left him stunned.
“Selene, do you even know what you’re saying? Did someone take over your body?”
She refused to look at him. “There’s nothing left to say between us. Go. I have plans, and I won’t see you out.”
She tugged Estella and Lana toward the street, but Greg stepped in front of her, his face hard.
“Say it plainly. You don’t love me anymore? That’s impossible. You promised you’d never give up on me. Are you breaking that promise now? Don’t play games with me, Selene. You know I don’t fall for that.”
Before Selene could answer, Lana had had enough. She swung her heavy studded handbag down on his head.
“You bastard! I’ve put up with you for years. Back then, I begged Selene to leave you, but she wouldn’t listen. Now that she’s finally rid of you, you dare to crawl back? Keep pushing, and I’ll beat you senseless!”
She and Selene had been friends since kindergarten, closer than sisters, and she’d seen every ugly chapter of this relationship. Each time she tried to pull Selene away, her friend refused, leaving Lana fuming and helpless.
Greg staggered back, bumps rising on his skull, his pride stung raw. “What does this have to do with you? This is between me and Selene!”
He raised a hand as if to strike her, but Estella and Selene were already swinging their own handbags at him.
Outnumbered, Greg stumbled backward, shielding himself. Still, he shouted, “Selene, you’re crazy! How can you treat me like this?”
Selene’s eyes blazed. “Lay a finger on my best friend, and you’re dead. If I ever see you again, I’ll break you in half!”
For the first time, Greg sensed she meant it. Bruised and humiliated, he turned and stalked off.
The three women stood together, waiting for Selene’s reaction, half–afraid she might soften.
But Selene only gritted her teeth. “Every time I remember losing a child because of that scumbag, damaging my own body for him, I want to kill him myself. I should’ve kicked him harder just now.”

Relief washed over Lana. She clasped her hands dramatically. “Thank God. My sister is finally sane again. One less lovesick fool in the world.”
Selene pinched her side. “Stop mocking me.”
Estella smiled. “Come on, let’s eat.”
“Yes, let’s. I’m starving,” Selene said quickly. “There’s a new restaurant opening today. I heard the owner hired three top male models just to liven things up. If we’re late, we won’t get a table.”
Lana’s eyes lit up. “That’s the spirit! Now that’s motivation for hardworking women like us.”
Halfway through dinner, Selene’s phone buzzed nonstop. She finally opened it and burst out laughing in disbelief. She handed it to her friends.
Greg had been texting from another number–pages of demands. He wanted Selene to reimburse half the rent from when they lived together, groceries, meals, even the cost of condoms, all listed down to the decimal point.
Estella gaped. “What about the expensive gifts you bought him? Why doesn’t he refund those?”
She knew Selene had spent a fortune on him: watches, ties, shoes, designer clothes.
Lana sneered. “Send him a bill of your own. See how he likes it. He’s had a free ride long enough.”
Selene’s jaw tightened. “I really was blind. I thought a modern woman shouldn’t take advantage of a man, so whenever he gave me something, I bought him something more expensive in return. I spoiled him rotten. Later, he turned stingy, made me pay for everything. Once, he even joked about proposing, said I was the only woman who’d never ask for money, never ask to split on a house or car. And I believed that nonsense.”
Her voice shook with fury. “Now we’ve broken up, and he still wants me to pay him back for rent and living expenses? I was a fool, but I won’t be again.”
Lana slammed her hand on the table. “He let you cook and clean for him. Where’s your paycheck for that? He should’ve paid you, not the other way around. What a joke!”
Selene clenched her fists. “And I was right not to have his child. Do you know why he divorced his wife? Because she was from a wealthy family. He thought she’d bankroll him. But she wasn’t stupid—she demanded he work, compared him to her relatives, spent his money. When he wanted a son, she told him not until he was rich. So he sulked and filed for divorce. Then he turned to me, saying I was getting old, that I was losing value, that no one else would want me. He told me to marry him without expecting money, to struggle alongside him, and to give him a son. What a disgusting man.”
