Without waiting for her mother’s response, Vivica ended the call.
The high-intensity workday had already left her physically and emotionally drained. The phone call from her family was like a violent storm, leaving her completely battered.
When she arrived at the hospital and saw her son waiting for her with a bright smile, Vivica’s own face finally broke into a genuine smile.
Ruby was there to switch shifts; she stayed at the hospital during the day and went home to sleep at night.
Before leaving, Ruby mentioned that Fletcher had visited earlier.
Vivica nodded. “I know. He called me.”
Feeling grateful for all the help her nanny had provided, Vivica smiled warmly. “Ruby, I know it’s been a lot of work for you lately. I’m going to give you a raise of five hundred dollars a month. I hope that’s okay.”
Ruby’s face lit up. “That’s more than okay! Thank you. I know you’re going through a tough time, so it means a lot that you’d still give me a raise.”
“I’m glad you understand.”
After Ruby left, Vivica looked at her son, Fletcher’s words replaying in her mind.
“Sweetheart, if Mommy and Daddy separate, who would you want to live with? Daddy might have more money, so you could have better food, more toys, and a nicer house. With Mommy…”
“I want Mommy!” the little boy exclaimed, cutting her off before she could finish.
“Daddy asked me that today,” he added firmly. “And I told him I want Mommy.”
Vivica stared at him, her eyes instantly welling with tears. She pulled him into a tight embrace.
