They favored their son over their daughter, leeched off Vivica, and were masters of moral blackmail, with a twisted sense of right and wrong.
But no matter how much she despised them, they were still the child’s grandparents. As a nanny, all she could do was maintain a cool distance.
Evelyn, sensing Ruby's attitude, was equally displeased. Her face hardened.
“We’ll stay with Chaim. You can go take a walk downstairs,” she ordered.
Ruby shot her a look. “No, thank you. It’s cold outside. Besides, Ms. Lynn instructed me not to leave his side for a moment.”
Evelyn had come with a purpose, and the nanny’s presence was an obstacle. She had to get rid of her.
“What kind of attitude is that? Do you think we’re thieves? Let me be clear, we are his grandparents, his family. You think we’re less trustworthy than an outsider like you?” Evelyn’s voice grew sharp and condescending.
Zebulon was even blunter. “Who do you think you are, a hired hand putting on airs? I told you to get lost, so get lost. You want me to have my daughter fire you right now?”
Ruby was a simple, honest woman. Being yelled at like that brought a flush of angry tears to her eyes. She stood her ground for a moment, but the humiliation was too much. She turned and stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her.
Still, her heart was uneasy. As she headed downstairs, she tried calling Vivica, but it went straight to voicemail. Figuring Vivica was busy at work, she didn't call again. Instead, she sent a quick text on WhatsApp to let her know Chaim’s grandparents had arrived.
...
Back in the room, Evelyn peeked through the crack in the door to make sure Ruby was gone before finally relaxing. She turned to her husband, her voice low. “Are we really going to do this? Vivica will be furious!”
“What choice do we have? You want our son to go to jail?” Zebulon snapped. “That wretched girl. She paid a hundred and fifty thousand for the hospital deposit in one go but won’t give us a single penny. That’s her own brother she’s letting rot!”
