“I’m still at the hospital,” Fletcher said, his voice laced with fatigue. “I told you this afternoon. My dad had a massive heart attack; he’s in critical condition.”

“How is he now?” Riley asked.

“They got to him in time, so he’s stable, but he’s emotionally fragile. The doctor said any kind of stress right now could trigger heart failure, and that would be catastrophic.”

Riley had heard bits and pieces about what happened earlier.

“This is all Vivica’s fault!” she spat. “It wasn’t enough for her to ruin your reputation; she had to go and put your father in the hospital. What did you ever see in that vicious snake?”

Fletcher’s mood soured. He hated Vivica, too. He hated her for broadcasting his deepest humiliation to the world and for turning his orderly life into a chaotic mess.

But Riley’s question stirred a complicated mix of feelings within him.

“It was right after you ghosted me,” he said, his voice taking on a wounded, helpless tone. “I was heartbroken. I only went after her to try and forget you.”

He painted himself as a victim of circumstance, conveniently omitting the fact that he had unscrupulously used Vivica, toying with her emotions to soothe his own ego. It was a deeply immoral act.

Riley paused, taken aback by his answer. Her voice softened immediately. “It’s all my fault… But I had no choice back then. I had to do it to save my mother.”

It had been years. Arguing about who was right or wrong now was pointless. Fletcher didn’t respond to that, simply saying, “You should get some sleep. I’m not coming back tonight. I have to stay with my dad.”

“What about our plans for tomorrow morning?” Riley pressed instantly. She couldn’t wait another second; she needed him to divorce Vivica now.

“I worked so hard to convince her,” she pleaded. “This is our chance to get you out of this with minimal cost. If we miss it, who knows what ridiculous demands she’ll make next…”
