He rose early, rearranged his work schedule for the day, and headed straight for the hospital.
Vivica had just finished breakfast with her son and was getting ready to leave. She had taken two hours off from work to go to the registry office and finalize the divorce before heading to the office.
After hugging her son goodbye, her phone rang just as she was about to walk out of the room. A flash of annoyance crossed her face when she saw the caller ID. It was her mother. She didn’t even need to answer to know what it was about. Her mother was calling to demand money.
“Vivica, it’s been two or three days. When are you getting the money to bail Zahar out? Are you lying to us?”
Just as she expected, Evelyn was calling for money, without a single word of concern for her daughter or her sick grandson.
Vivica didn’t tell her the money was coming today. Instead, she walked toward the door and replied, “I’m doing my best to figure it out.”
“I don’t care what you have to do, I want that money today. Otherwise, I’m coming to get Chaim. You can have him back when you have our money.” Evelyn’s voice was sharp with desperation.
The threat ignited a firestorm of resentment in Vivica’s heart. “Mom! I’m your daughter too! Don’t you think this favoritism is going too far? I told you I would get it as soon as I could—”
She kept her voice low, a painful mix of anger and anguish. As she was speaking, she stepped out of the hospital room and looked up, freezing mid-sentence.
Joseph was standing right in front of her.
The sight of his tall, distinguished figure was so unexpected that she momentarily forgot she was on the phone.
“Mr. Baird?” she said, surprised.
Joseph’s handsome face was calm, his aura cool and composed. He gave a slight nod and gestured toward her phone. “Please, finish your call.”
