“Lucas, are you possessed or something?” Samson waved a hand in front of his face. “You’re totally out of
it.”
Lucas suddenly stood, grabbed his suit jacket, and strode toward the door.
“Lucas, where are you going?”
“To buy lipstick.”
Samson stared at his retreating back as he disappeared into the elevator, then glanced at his watch in shock -it was nine o’clock at night.
What the heck! He bolted after him. Lucas had actually said he was going to buy lipstick!
Shamelessly climbing into Lucas’ car, Samson grinned and reminded him, “Lucas, at this hour, the stores are already closed!”
Lucas nodded with complete seriousness. “I already called their manager.”
On the other side of town, the mall manager nearly dropped his phone when he got Lucas’ call. He immediately rounded up all the sales associates, ordering them back to their counters. Within minutes, the entire cosmetics floor was ablaze with light, every employee standing at the ready.
When Lucas strode in, the manager rushed over. “Mr. Hawthorne, we’ve prepared every shade of rose- colored lipstick…”
Lucas pulled a handkerchief from his suit pocket. A half-clear lip print marked the fabric. “Find this color.”
The salesgirls jumped into action. Samson stood slack-jawed as dozens of lipsticks were lined up in front of Lucas.
His long, elegant fingers picked them up one by one, only to set each one back down. His brow furrowed tighter and tighter.
“None of these are right,” he said in a low voice. “Keep looking.”
Lucas stood at that counter for three full hours, trying every rose-toned lipstick they had; yet not one matched the exact shade and fragrance of the one on Sloane’s lips.
“Mr. Hawthorne, this is the last one…”/A salesgirl handed over a limited edition tube from a certain brand.
Lucas twisted it open, swiped a stroke onto a test card, then bent to inhale the scent. His brows knit even closer. “Not it.”
The manager and the salesgirls hovered anxiously, unsure what to do.
Lucas lifted his wrist, glanced at his watch, then said, “Thank you for tonight. Count these three hours as overtime; give them three days’ pay”
“Thank you, Mr. Hawthorne!” The girls, who had been dragging their feet with exhaustion, instantly lit up
with excitement.

Lucas pulled out his phone and sent Andrew a message: “Within three days, I want this lipstick found. Whoever gets it will be rewarded.”
Samson gawked at him. “Lucas, you’re actually…”
“Tomorrow we keep searching.” Lucas tucked the handkerchief back into his jacket pocket and strode off.
That night, the salesgirls’ private Stonebridge chat group exploded.
“Ladies! The president of Hawthorne Group tested eighty-three lipsticks at our counter today!”
“Same here! He even tried a limited edition that’s been discontinued for five years!”
“I heard the lip print on his handkerchief was faint, like it came straight off someone’s lips…”
“Gosh! That meant someone had kissed Mr. Hawthorne, and now he was scouring the city for the exact lipstick that mystery woman had worn!”
“This is insane! Who the heck is this woman?”
By dawn the next morning, before the malls had even opened, salesgirls were already receiving urgent notices: “Mr. Hawthorne would be continuing his search today. Every rose-colored lipstick had to be restocked; even old, forgotten inventory had to be dug up.”
“Hurry! Get out last year’s limited editions too!” Store managers ran around in a frenzy.
Meanwhile, Sloane was buried in experiments with her research team, working around the clock; she had no idea what Lucas was up to.
