Chapter 318 Lucas Wants A Doorway

Conor glanced at Lucas; this was already his eighth visit that month, and it was only the fifteenth.

“Mr. Hawthorne, are you just clocking in here now?” Conor looked at him helplessly.

Lucas sat across from him, his long fingers tapping lightly on the table. “I came to see how this batch of robots is progressing in their training.”

Conor gave a short, incredulous laugh. “You really need to come here twice a week for something that minor?”

Lucas didn’t so much as blink at being called out. “It shows how seriously our company takes its responsibilities,” he replied smoothly.

Conor shot him a sideways look, then cut straight to the point. “Don’t bother. Sloane’s in the lab; she won’t be coming out anytime soon. You could make eight hundred trips here, and it wouldn’t change a thing.”

Lucas’ fingers stilled against the table for a moment; a sharp glint flickered in his eyes. “As it happens, I brought the latest AI training system. It needs to be field-tested with the troops.”

Conor raised a brow. “Oh? What a coincidence.”

Lucas calmly pulled a file from his briefcase. “This system is worth a hundred million. It’s been optimized specifically for military use.”

“You little fox!” Conor slapped the table, though he couldn’t help laughing. “Fine, you win. You’ve managed to work it all out.”

Lucas got what he wanted-a spot inside the military’s experimental base. His base sat right next to Sloane’s lab, separated only by a wall; but because of the strict confidentiality of her work, he still couldn’t see her.

He stood in the hallway outside, so close and yet so far from the woman who haunted his every thought.

“Lucas, this plan isn’t working,” Samson strolled over, grinning. “Want me to knock a hole in the wall for you?”

Lucas shot him a cold glare. “Are your tests done? Or do you really have that much time to wander around?”

Samson hunched his shoulders and slipped away.

Lucas remained at the base for a month. Even after all the testing was completed, he never once saw Sloane.

With no excuse left to linger, he had no choice but to return to the company.

Around that time, another incident shook Stonebridge. A mysterious healer suddenly appeared, renowned for extraordinary medical skill. Rumor had it this doctor could treat the most difficult and complex conditions; yet kept a low profile, never showing a true face, going only by the name Dr. Bonnie.

Word quickly reached Lucas.

“Lucas, I heard Dr. Bonnie’s skills are on par with Sloane’s!” Samson reported, brimming with excitement. “They say she’s about to partner with Consuela Pharmaceutical to develop a new anti-cancer drug.”

Lucas’ pen paused mid-stroke, his gaze darkening. “Have you traced her background?”

“Not a chance.” Samson scratched his head. “The person’s a ghost. Shows up all covered from head to toe. You can’t even tell if it’s a man or a woman.”

Lucas stared out the window in thought. The mysterious identity; the one who saved the head of the Stonebridge family; the one said to be working on an anti-cancer drug… Is this person deliberately imitating Sloane, or is it just coincidence?

Meanwhile, at the Stonebridge Television Studio.

“Please, Dr. Rivers, Dr. Bonnie-save my son!” A haggard mother fell to her knees before the cameras, tears streaming as she held up her child’s medical file. “He’s only six years old, but he’s already undergone three craniotomies… The doctors said if no new treatment can be found…”

The host took the microphone with a heavy heart. “It’s reported that the young patient suffers from a rare condition-a congenital disorder of the brain’s blood vessels. At present, there are no known successful cases of a cure, either here or abroad. We appeal to all sectors of society to lend a helping hand…”
