“There will never be such a day.” Cameron cut her off firmly. “No one knows better than I do how hard it is to gain her trust-and how painful it would be to lose it.”

From outside came Jill’s cheerful humming. Cameron immediately stepped back half a pace, slipping seamlessly into his usual calm, gentle demeanor. But when the door to the hospital room swung open, Sloane clearly caught the way his hand, hanging at his side, was digging hard into his own palm.

“Got the thermometer!” Jill bounded in, then suddenly froze. “Wait-why do you two look so weird?”

Her eyes narrowed suspiciously as she studied them. “Were you badmouthing me behind my back?”

Cameron naturally took the item from her hand. “We were talking about how, when you were seven, you snuck a frog into my backpack.”

“Oh, come on-I apologized for that!” Jill stomped her foot, flustered, and quickly turned to Sloane for support. “And after that, I even ate vegetables for a whole month on his behalf! He hates them the most; he gave me all of his in secret.”

At that, Cameron lowered his head with a quiet laugh. In truth, it had always been Jill who was picky about vegetables; she refused to eat them. I had only said that so she would get proper nutrition.

After Jill and Cameron left, Lucas came in to find Sloane leaning against the headboard, lost in thought.

“Thinking about Jill?” His fingertip brushed lightly against the crease between her brows.

Sloane lifted her gaze to him. “I was wondering… should I tell Jill the marriage alliance was actually Cameron’s doing?”

Lucas let out a low chuckle and sat down at her bedside. “Do you really think you need to?”

“Cameron’s feelings for Jill-who in the Besnard family or the Clark family doesn’t know? She’s the only one still clueless.”

Sloane blinked in surprise, recalling countless moments between the two. “You’re right… Cameron’s care for Jill is so obvious.”

“On Jill’s eighteenth birthday,” Lucas went on, taking her hand and curling it into his palm, “Cameron got drunk and clung to that big old tree out front, calling your name all night. In the end, his older brother had to carry him home.”

Sloane’s eyes widened. “That happened?”

“It’s just that no one ever told Jill.”

Outside, the plane trees rustled; a fallen leaf tapped gently against the glass,

“And besides,” Lucas said, toying with Sloane’s delicate hand, “Samson dotes on Jill like his own niece. With his temperament, do you think Cameron could have gotten anywhere near her without Samson’s silent approval?”

Sloane thought of the knowing smiles Samson always gave whenever he looked at Cameron; suddenly, it

Lucas went on. “The Clark family has three sons-the eldest took over the family business, the second went into politics, and that leaves Cameron, the youngest, free to do as he pleases.” He laced his fingers tightly through hers.

“If Jill marries him, she won’t have to deal with complicated family politics; and she’ll have in-laws who’ve watched her grow up and cherish her deeply.”

“But still-”

“Cameron truly loves Jill,” Lucas interrupted gently, his thumb brushing over the marks from her IV needle. “He’ll go on loving her and protecting her. And most importantly, Jill doesn’t object to marrying him.”

“Don’t worry if that Clark boy ever dares treat Jill poorly…” His eyes narrowed. “Samson will be the first to break his legs.”

Three days later, news of the alliance between the Clark family and the Besnard family swept through the entire upper-class social circle.

The front page of “The News” featured a photo of the two family heads raising their glasses in celebration, framed by the bold headline: “Film Empire and Financial Powerhouse Unite.” In the corner of the image, Cameron was caught adjusting the scarf the wind had blown across Jill’s neck-his gaze so tender it looked as if it could melt into liquid.
