At Sloane’s insistence, she finally convinced Lucas to agree to her discharge.

A black Maybach rolled slowly into the Hawthorne residence. Molly stood at the entrance of the main house with the entire staff lined up neatly behind her.

At the front stood Tessa, leaning on her agarwood cane. Her silver hair was combed to perfection, and her smile stretched so wide it smoothed the wrinkles around her eyes. “At last-we finally have Sloane back home!”

Just as Sloane was about to step out of the car, Lucas had already circled to the passenger side; without giving her a chance to protest, he swept her up in his arms.

“Lucas!” Sloane whispered in protest. “I can walk on my own…”

“The doctor said you’re not to strain yourself.” Lucas’ expression didn’t waver as he carried her up the steps. He bent close to her ear, his warm breath brushing against her earlobe.

“Besides…” His voice dropped, teasing, “I want to hold you.”

Before Sloane could respond, Tessa stepped forward, smiling from ear to ear. “Don’t be shy; just let Lucas carry you inside. He’s strong-he won’t drop you.”

Sloane’s face flushed crimson. “Madam Tessa…”

“Haha!” Tessa laughed even harder. “Whatever needs saying, say it once we’re inside.”

Lucas carried her steadily up the steps, each stride solid and sure.

“The president had the master bedroom redecorated just for you,” Molly said cheerfully as she followed behind. “The mattress has been replaced with the softest one, and the curtains changed to lavender-the color Ms. Rivers likes best.”

“The kitchen is also simmering a cordyceps duck soup, made especially to nourish Ms. Rivers…” Molly went on chatting as they walked.

Lucas carried Sloane directly upstairs to the bedroom and laid her gently on the bed.

Tessa came in with her cane, pulling a small rosewood box from her arms.

“Here, Sloane-wear this for fun.” She opened it to reveal a pair of crystal-clear jade bangles. “They’re nothing extravagant; just a little token from an old woman like me.”

Sloane recognized at once that the bangles were anything but ordinary; they were priceless. She quickly tried to refuse. “Madam Tessa, this is far too precious…”

“Take it!” Tessa pulled her hand forward, but then suddenly froze. “Oh my-why have you gotten so thin?”

She touched Sloane’s slender wrist with distress, then turned and glared at Lucas. “And you call this taking

care of someone?”

Lucas stood to the side, his brow furrowed. “It’s my fault.”

“Of course it’s your fault!” Tessa scolded, though her voice softened as she carefully slid the bangle onto Sloane’s wrist. “It’s even a whole size bigger now… Sloane, from now on, whatever you want to eat, just say the word; I’ll have the kitchen prepare tonics for you every single day.”

The green jade slipped smoothly over Sloane’s wrist, its vibrant hue making her skin look even fairer. Tessa nodded in satisfaction. “This is just for you to wear around; I still have better ones. They’ll all be yours in time!”

Lucas added, “Grandmother gave it to you-you should keep it.”

Only then did Sloane stop trying to remove the bangle.

Molly appeared at just the right moment, carrying a steaming bowl of cordyceps soup. The fragrance filled the entire room instantly.

Tessa personally took the bowl. “Here, have some soup first; I had the kitchen prepare it especially-”

“Madam Tessa, let me.” Sloane quickly reached out, but Lucas intercepted her, taking the bowl first.

“I’ll do it.” His long, steady fingers held the celadon bowl as he scooped up a spoonful, blowing on it gently “Careful-it’s hot.”
