Kaizen recovered quickly, his expression darkening. “Dr. Rivers,” he said gravely, “did you discover something? Is that why you sent everyone else away?”
Sloane nodded. “Mr. Jeffrey isn’t sick; he’s been poisoned.”
Shawn gasped. “What?”
“Shh.” Sloane gestured for him to lower his voice. “I suspect the person who poisoned him is someone within the Oliver family.”
Kaizen’s face turned to stone. “I knew something was off. Father’s always been strong–how could he suddenly…” He clenched his fists, his voice tightening. “Dr. Rivers, why do you think the poisoner is someone in our family?”
“This toxin has to be administered three times before it takes full effect; that means it’s been going on for at least two weeks,” Sloane explained. “In other words, the timing of the poisoning can be controlled by whoever’s behind it.”
“And when the poison takes effect, it looks exactly like an illness,” she continued. “Given that Beth’s accident and the investigation into the Oliver family happened recently, the culprit likely chose this time on purpose–to make Mr. Jeffrey’s poisoning look like a sudden illness. None of you would have suspected it was deliberate.”
Kaizen’s
eyes
flashed cold. “Such a vicious, calculating scheme.”
“Dr. Rivers,” Shawn interrupted, his voice trembling with urgency, “after all that–you can still save him, right?” All that mattered to him was his grandfather’s life.
Kaizen turned toward Sloane as well, anxiety written all over his face.
Sloane nodded slightly. “Yes, I can.”
“That’s great!” Shawn exhaled in relief. He didn’t know why, but he trusted Sloane completely; if she said it could be done, then it could.
Kaizen’s expression softened too. Looking at Sloane’s face–so strikingly similar to his sister’s -it was as if he were seeing a young Beth again.
He shook his head. Impossible. I must be exhausted to even think that. That child’s been gone for years…
“I’ll detoxify Jeffrey first,” Sloane said, taking a needle from her medical kit. “But afterward, I’ll need both of you to help me stage a scene–to flush out the traitor inside the Oliver family.”

“Tell us what to do,” Kaizen replied firmly.

“When we go out there,” Sloane instructed quickly, “pretend you’re weak and exhausted. I’ll tell everyone the bloodline therapy worked–but that it’ll take several more treatments before Jeffrey fully recovers.”
Kaizen nodded heavily. “Understood. We’ll follow your lead.”
Once the plan was set, Sloane began the treatment.
She laid out several needles in a neat line. Her slender fingers moved deftly among them; each needle pierced a precise acupoint with unerring accuracy.
Kaizen couldn’t help glancing at her profile—the calm focus in her expression, the quiet determination in her movements; it was exactly how Beth had looked in her youth. If that child had survived, she’d be about Dr. Rivers’s age now.
“The last one,” Sloane murmured, gently inserting a hair–thin needle into the acupoint between Jeffrey’s upper lip and nose.
Miraculously, Jeffrey’s eyelids began to twitch; his breathing grew stronger and steadier. The numbers on the monitors slowly returned to normal ranges.
“Grandpa!” Shawn cried, about to rush forward–but Lucas stopped him.
“Wait five more minutes,” Sloane said, wiping sweat from her forehead.
The room fell into an eerie silence.
Kaizen’s gaze stayed fixed on Sloane’s back, questions swirling in his mind; Shawn, meanwhile, stared intently at his grandfather’s face, terrified of missing even the smallest sign of change.
