Sloane quietly stepped aside, watching father and son argue over rescuing their loved ones. In the end, it was Kaizen who convinced Jeffrey. “Beth’s my only sister,” he said firmly. “I have to bring her back.”
After a moment of thought, Sloane took several finely wrapped herbal sachets from her medical kit and handed them to Kaizen. “Mr. Kaizen, the Black Desert is a brutal place; these herbs might help.”
Kaizen accepted them, catching a faint, clean medicinal scent. “What are these?”
“The white one is anti–sandthorn powder–it can neutralize toxins in the quicksand,” Sloane explained, pointing to each pouch in turn. “The green one is a cooling blend; it helps prevent heatstroke in temperatures up to about a hundred and twenty degrees. The red one is the rarest–it’s an old formula called Mindsteady. If the magnetic field scrambles your senses and makes you disoriented, place one under your tongue–it’ll help keep you clear–headed.”
Jeffrey’s clouded eyes flickered with surprise. “Dr. Rivers, you made these yourself?”
“I did. I came across the recipes in an old medical text,” Sloane said lightly, not mentioning how difficult it had been to gather the ingredients.
“We should get to the airport,” Lucas said, wrapping an arm around Sloane’s shoulders. He nodded politely to the Oliver family. “May Ms. Beth return safely.”
As Kaizen watched the two walk away, he turned to his father. “Dad, you’ve seen Dr. Rivers’s skill firsthand. If we could invite her to go to Ravoth with us…”
Jeffrey’s gaze sharpened. “You want Sloane to go?”
“Exactly.” Kaizen sat down across from him. “The Black Desert’s conditions are too extreme; ordinary doctors won’t survive, let alone help. Dr. Rivers understands ancient medicine–if she comes, we’ll stand a much better chance of getting through and saving Beth.”
Jeffrey pondered for a moment, then slowly shook his head. “That wouldn’t be wise.”
“Why not? We can offer more than enough compensation-”
“You think Lucas would agree?” Jeffrey interrupted, tapping the table lightly with his finger. “Do you even understand the Hawthornes‘ standing in Stonebridge? Judging by how much Lucas values Sloane, she’s clearly the future matriarch of that family; do you really think she needs your money?”

Kaizen frowned. “But Beth’s life is at stake-”

“Exactly why you can’t act rashly.” Jeffrey rose and walked to the window. “Kaizen, remember this: the Oliver family has survived abroad for a century not by forcing others, but by knowing when to advance and when to yield.”
He turned back, his gaze steady. “If we try to hold Sloane here today, the Hawthornes‘ retaliation will crush every bit of our overseas business by tomorrow. Besides-” a knowing glint flashed in his eyes—“do you know why Nathan treats Lucas with such respect? That young man’s background runs deep; deeper than you realize.”
Kaizen finally understood. “I was careless.”
On the road to the airport, Sloane stared out the window, watching the scenery blur past; her fingers absentmindedly brushed the jade bracelet on her wrist.
Lucas glanced over and noticed her lowered lashes, the distant look in her eyes.
“Sir, turn the car around,” Lucas suddenly said to the driver.
Sloane blinked, startled. “What’s wrong?”
Lucas took her hand, his voice low and resolute. “We’re going back–to Ravoth.”
Her eyes immediately reddened. “But we agreed to go back for Jill’s engagement party…”
“We can celebrate when they get married,” Lucas said softly, wiping the tears from her lashes.
“You want to go, don’t you? Even if Jeffrey insists you’re not Beth’s daughter, you can’t let her go–not in your heart.”
