The steady rhythm of the pestle striking the stone mortar echoed through the quiet night. Beth’s tears were already falling freely as she reached out, her hand trembling–but she stopped just short of touching Sloane’s shoulder.
“It’s all behind me now.” Sloane looked up, offering Beth a faint, resilient smile. “Right now, I just want to find out who I really am.”
Beth could no longer hold back. She pulled Sloane into her arms, voice breaking. “My poor child… you’ve suffered so much.”
Sloane’s body stiffened at first, then slowly relaxed. Yet she couldn’t bring herself to return the embrace.
She was afraid–afraid it would all end the same way it had eight years ago, afraid that the warmth she felt now would vanish again like a dream.
Beth finally loosened her hold, her voice soft but urgent. “How did you meet Shawn?”
What she really wanted to ask was why Sloane had gone to Mirevia at all.
Sloane told her everything about Jessica. “I once tried to get her to talk, and she never denied that you were my mother. After she died, I did some digging and learned you were in Mirevia…”
At the mention of Jessica’s name, Beth’s composure broke. “Jessica… When I gave birth, it was her–she took my baby while I was unconscious!”
Her hands clutched Sloane’s shoulders tightly. “You said she didn’t deny it?”
Sloane nodded. “Yes. She even said she wanted to make sure we’d never reunite.”
Beth’s mind spun in chaos. “Then… who was that baby from twenty years ago?”
Seeing her distress, Sloane spoke softly. “Please don’t panic. The truth will come out eventually.”
But Beth knew Jessica too well. That woman had always been capable of anything–cruel, obsessive, and utterly unpredictable. The more she thought about it, the more certain she became that Sloane was her daughter. Whatever happened back then, there had to be another secret buried beneath it.
The next morning, Shawn brought Lucas to meet Sloane.

Lucas’s condition had improved. Though his right arm was still in a cast, his strength and color had returned. When he saw Sloane, concern flickered in his eyes. “You didn’t rest at all last night, did you?”
Sloane shook her head and handed him a cup of medicinal tea. “Mr. Tony’s condition still needs close observation.”
Shawn grinned. “Dr. Rivers, my uncle was walking around this morning. You’re incredible.”
As they spoke, Beth entered the tent. “Dr. Rivers, we could only find half the herbs you requested–and it’s impossible to transport the rest into the Black Desert.”
Sloane stood immediately, worry clouding her face. “Then we can’t stay here any longer. Mr. Tony and Lucas both need better conditions to recover.”
“I agree,” Beth said with a nod. “Leave it to me–I’ll handle the arrangements.”
Shawn looked between the two women, marveling at how identical they looked. “This is unbelievable,” he muttered.
Then, with a teasing smile, he asked, “Aunt Beth, are you sure Dr. Rivers isn’t your daughter?”
Beth turned to Sloane, her voice low. “I don’t know…”
“That’s easy to find out,” Shawn said. “Just run a DNA test.”
At his words, Beth’s heart tightened. She looked at Sloane, her voice cautious. “Dr. Rivers… what do you think?”
Sloane exchanged a glance with Lucas, then nodded slowly. “Once we’re back home, I’m willing to do it. I want to know too–so that none of us will have to live with regrets.”
