490 The Truth in Blood
Grayson, being a doctor himself, knew how close to death he had been–the bullet had struck dangerously near his heart. It must have taken all of Sloane’s skill and strength to pull him back from the brink.
He looked at her with deep remorse and said solemnly, “Dr. Rivers, I owe you an apology.”
Sloane blinked in confusion. “Dr. Grayson, what are you apologizing for?”
Grayson drew in a shaky breath and struggled to prop himself up on one elbow. “The paternity test result between you and Beth- it was fake.”
“What?” The three of them–Sloane, Lucas, and Shawn–stared at him in shock.
Grayson’s eyes filled with guilt. “Before the test, Mr. Tony came to me privately.”
Shawn’s voice jumped an octave. “Uncle Tony? Why would he do that?”
“Mr. Tony was afraid,” Grayson explained slowly. “He thought the test might prove you weren’t their daughter, and that would devastate Beth.”
He paused for breath, his voice low and weary. “Then, the next day, Dania came to my office. She gave me a fake paternity report and told me to present it when the time came.”
“Wait a second!” Shawn frowned, utterly confused. “Uncle Tony didn’t want Aunt Beth to be sad, right? Then why did Dania give you a fake report saying Sloane wasn’t Aunt Beth’s daughter? That doesn’t make sense!”
Lucas’s eyes suddenly lit with realization. “I get it. Mr. Tony already believed Sloane wasn’t his and Aunt Beth’s daughter. So he had a false report prepared ahead of time. When the real results came out and confirmed his belief, you were supposed to hand over the fake one–to comfort Aunt Beth.”
Grayson nodded weakly. “Exactly. When I got that forged report from Dania, I asked her about it. She said it was Mr. Tony’s instruction.”
Shawn’s face darkened as understanding dawned. “Then that witch Dania must have switched the reports! She gave Uncle Tony’s real one to someone else and kept the fake one for herself!”
But Sloane wasn’t listening to their back–and–forth. Her voice trembled as she fixed her eyes on Grayson. “Dr. Grayson… the real paternity test–what did it say?”
The room fell silent. The rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor was the only sound.
Grayson slowly pressed a hidden latch on his wristwatch and retrieved a small, folded sheet of paper. “This… is the real report. I hid it when I realized someone was following me.”
Sloane froze, her fingers hovering in the air, trembling violently but unable to reach for it. Lucas noticed and gently took her hand, steadying her as he unfolded the paper himself.
The faint rustle of paper filled the room. Shawn leaned over, scanning the last line in haste-
“Paternity probability: 99.99%.”
He whipped his head up, eyes wide, his voice breaking with excitement. “Sloane! You really are Aunt Beth’s daughter!”
