“Lindsay is just too perfect—even after getting married, men line up for her,” Naomi remarked, her tone warm on the surface, but her real meaning was clear: Lindsay was married, yet still couldn’t keep herself in check, going out to dinner with other men.
“Oh, give me a break!” Mary huffed, thoroughly indignant. “She’s got some nerve. She knows that guy is your boyfriend and still accepts his invitation? She’s trying to steal your man and make a fool of her own husband at the same time! I can’t stand women like that—no shame at all.”
Naomi just shook her head and sighed, staying silent. But even without words, the bitterness and helplessness she felt were plain as day.
After everything that happened at the meeting this morning, Mary couldn’t help but feel sorry for Naomi. First, she lost her spot in the competition, and now her boyfriend seemed to be slipping away too.
“Come on,” Mary said, grabbing her purse. “Dinner’s on me tonight. If a guy can be stolen that easily, he’s not worth crying over.”
Naomi smiled and played along, though inside she seethed. Lester wasn’t some nobody—he was wealthy, ambitious, and a real catch. That was exactly why she couldn’t let go.
“Alright, then I’ll take you up on that dinner,” Naomi replied.
Mary looped her arm through Naomi’s. “Don’t be so polite. You’ve treated me plenty of times—it’s about time I returned the favor.”
Naomi nodded with a sly smile, though her thoughts were far from friendly. She was already plotting how to use Mary against Lindsay.
…
Lester was the perfect gentleman all evening—soft-spoken and attentive.
“This steak’s too big. Here, let me cut it up for you.”
