“Why would I be guilty?” Felicia shot back, her irritation clear.

“If you didn’t do anything, then what are you so nervous about?”

“I’m not nervous.”

“Who knows what’s on your mind.”

Felicia glared, too tired to keep up this back and forth. Her stomach was already churning, and arguing with this jerk only made it worse. She wanted to snap at him, maybe even slap him, but right now she barely had the energy to stand. She decided to ignore him completely, walking past him without another word.

But of course, he couldn’t leave it alone. His voice came from behind her, cool and sharp. “I didn’t realize your marriage was that much of a mess. Did it ever cross your mind that you might be part of the problem?”

Felicia stopped in her tracks, anger flaring in her chest. She turned around, trying to keep her voice steady. “A decent man wouldn’t say something like that. Honestly, I feel sorry for your wife.”

Max looked at her, his eyes darkening, but Felicia didn’t bother waiting for a response. She turned away, headed back into the private room, and apologized to the group. She grabbed her bag and left, only to bump into Max again in the hallway. Felicia glanced at him, then looked away and hurried past. She’d already called Tommy to come get her.

By the time she reached the elevators, her stomach cramped so hard she had to stop. One hand braced against the wall, the other pressed to her abdomen, she took a moment to steady herself, breathing through the pain. When she felt strong enough, she hit the down button. The doors opened right away, and she stepped inside.

Just as the doors started to close, they slid open again. She looked up and saw Max standing there. He barely glanced at her before stepping in, silent.
