“Okay.”

Felicia set her phone down and glanced over her shoulder. She caught sight of Anne playing with Max. Whatever he said must have been funny, because Anne leaned into him and burst out laughing, her voice ringing through the living room, bright and carefree.

Felicia just stood there for a moment, watching them.

Then Max looked up. The warmth in his smile faded as soon as his eyes met Felicia’s.

Anne turned to her. “Evelynn.”

Felicia smiled, running her fingers through Anne’s hair.

They stayed with Anne in the living room for a while. With her bubbly personality, the room felt light and easy. Everything on the surface seemed peaceful.

Before it was even nine, Anne started yawning.

She wanted to sleep next to Felicia tonight.

The nanny had already set up a guest room. Felicia planned to take Anne there to sleep.

But as they headed upstairs, Max stepped out of his room, fresh from a shower. He wore a deep blue silk robe, the belt tied at his waist showing off his broad shoulders and narrow hips. The V-neck revealed just a bit of his strong chest, and his short hair was still damp.

“Daddy, I want to sleep with Evelynn tonight,” Anne announced.

Max looked at Anne, then turned to Felicia, his tone all business. “Anne doesn’t like strange beds. Take her to the master bedroom.”

Whenever they stayed here, Max always had Anne sleep in the master bedroom with him.

Felicia, though, had no interest in stepping into his space.

Five years ago, aside from that one night when things went too far, they hadn’t shared anything close to intimacy since signing the marriage papers. She had never slept in his bed.

And now, there was no way she was going to sleep in his room.

Felicia scooped Anne up, not even acknowledging Max’s words. She said to Anne, “How about we sleep in the guest room tonight?”
