Paxton finished going over the files. From the start, they knew Max was married. Now his wife had come back, asking for a divorce, not asking for any of his money or property, not even fighting for custody of their daughter. After she hung up, Anne hugged her stuffed bunny and started hopping around on the sofa, totally thrilled.

Max reached out to steady her. “Careful, you’ll fall.”

Anne giggled and dove into his arms, cuddling against his chest.

Max stroked her hair, his eyes soft and full of love.
