It was just past noon when Luke showed up at the Ross house.

Anne spotted him first. Her whole face brightened. “Luke!”

He’d just called Felicia and already knew Anne would be there, so he didn’t look surprised. Instead, he strode over and lifted Anne right off her feet.

“Did you miss me, Anne?” He gave her nose a playful little squeeze.

“Of course I missed you. Did you miss me?” Anne giggled.

“I did, you little rascal.”

Lunch was a full table with everyone talking over each other and passing dishes around. It was loud and warm, the kind of meal that made you feel like you belonged.

Anne and Yara were everyone’s favorites. Felicia kept an eye on Anne, making sure she had enough to eat. She looked so happy just watching her daughter next to her, like nothing else in the world mattered.

After lunch, Felicia had to get going. She had a live show to host at the TV station that night, so she’d already told Anne she’d be busy and asked Ava to help out a bit more.

“Don’t worry, we’ll take good care of her,” Ava promised.

Heather and Yara would hang around too, keeping Anne company.

Jeremy looked like he wanted to say something, but Luke jumped in first. “I’ll drive you, Felicia. I’ve got a free afternoon, might as well play chauffeur.”

Jeremy closed his mouth, letting it go.

Felicia grinned. “If it’s a free ride, I’ll take it.”

Luke laughed. “I wouldn’t even dare ask you for money.”

“That’s what I thought.”

Everyone broke out laughing. Heather noticed her brother’s little frown and let out a silent sigh.

Felicia turned to Jeremy. “Any plans this afternoon?”
