“Is this Mr. Foxhall’s?” Felicia asked, holding up the watch.

Earlier, when Darin answered his phone, he had accidentally pulled the old pocket watch out of his pocket. It had slipped onto the carpet at the entrance without a sound. He only realized it was missing when he was almost at the elevator and reached into his pocket.

“It’s mine,” Darin said.

Felicia offered the watch to him. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to. If it’s broken, I can pay for the repairs.”

Darin took the watch from her. It had split into two, and the protective cover over the photo inside was cracked. He studied it for a moment, then tucked it back into his pocket.

“If it was an accident, Evelynn, there’s no need to pay for anything,” he said.

Felicia nodded and let it go.

Darin gave Anthony a quick nod before heading out.

Watching him leave, Anthony leaned over, curiosity in his voice. “He looked pretty stressed about that watch. Must be something special inside.”

Felicia shot him a glance. “If you really want to know, you could go ask him.”

Anthony grinned. “I’m not that nosy.”

They headed for the elevator together.

By nine that night, the dinner was finally over. Felicia went back to The Crestwood Estates. Heather had already taken Yara home.

Anne was still awake, lying in bed with her tablet, video chatting with Max.

The bedroom door opened with a soft click.

Anne perked up, dropped her tablet, and hopped out of bed, running straight for Felicia. “Evelynn, you’re finally home!”
