The Wife You Buried Is Back from Hell novel Chapter 782

Alexander said nothing.

She hesitated, watching his stony silence, then couldn’t hold back any longer. “And what about Niki? She’s your daughter—your own flesh and blood. Doesn’t it hurt you at all?”

“She’s never once called you ‘Dad’ all these years. Are you really okay with that? Back then, you were the one who insisted she not call you her father—what were you thinking?”

“How could I not feel it?” Alexander’s voice finally broke the stillness, rough and raw, as if scraped by sandpaper. “But the word ‘father’ means nothing compared to her safety.”

He turned to gaze out the window, his eyes drifting over Danielle’s apartment balcony. A warm light glowed there, but there was no longer a place for him. “The truth is, they’re better off without me. Danielle bought her own place, raised Niki on her own, and even made a name for herself in research.”

His voice dropped, tinged with a bitter self-mockery. “All those years, I did things for them—sometimes the wrong things—just trying to keep them safe from harm.”

“I don’t deserve to be called ‘Dad’ by Niki. I don’t deserve Danielle’s forgiveness, either.”

Rebecca watched the sorrow clouding his eyes, feeling a pang deep in her chest.

She’d known Alexander for years and had never seen him look so lost, so hollow. The man she remembered was ruthless in the boardroom, always calm even in a crisis. But when it came to Danielle and Niki, he was like a child, clumsy and helpless, doing the only thing he knew—keeping them safe, no matter how awkwardly.

“All I’ve ever wanted,” Alexander murmured, his words soft as a whisper yet painfully clear, “is for them to be safe. That’s all I’ve ever wished for. For them to live peacefully, far away from my mess, far away from danger.”

Rebecca drew a deep breath, pushing down the tangle of emotions inside her. She reached into her bag, pulled out a folder, and handed it to Alexander. “Well, you got your wish. The Strategic Intelligence Agency has assigned a team. From now on, they’ll be watching over Danielle and Niki. Nothing like what happened before will ever happen again.”

Alexander took the folder, his fingers brushing against the cool paper. For the first time that night, some of the hardness melted from his eyes.

Danielle’s heart skipped a beat. The phone almost slipped from her hand.

She stood frozen for a moment, letting Gian’s words sink in.

Of course.

To advance in her field meant round after round of strict review, endless paperwork, and agonizing waiting. National-level researchers were held to the highest standard.

But now, with everything cleared, all the protections she’d hoped for would be in place.

“Dani, congratulations,” Gian said, his voice warm with pride. “You’re making a real mark in this field, and I couldn’t be happier for you. I just got off the phone with Mr. Hawthorne, actually. He wanted me to tell you personally—he’s thrilled, and you can finally rest easy.”
