“You’re new here. You probably haven’t tried the best food spots in Nexus Prime yet. I can be your guide.”

Danielle was taken aback for a moment before shaking her head. “No, thank you. I have to pick up my daughter from school. Maybe some other time.”

“Your daughter?”

The smile vanished from River’s face, replaced by pure shock. “Chief Engineer Crawford… you have a child?”

He never would have guessed that someone so young was already a mother.

Danielle nodded. “Yes. She’s in first grade. We just transferred to a school here in Nexus Prime.”

River quickly recovered, his smile returning. “Well, that’s even more reason for us to go!”

“I’d love to meet her. We could take her to the playground downtown. Since you’re both new here, you probably don’t know your way around yet.”

Danielle frowned at him.

River held up his hands. “Don’t get me wrong. I just want to get to know my new colleague better and help you out with childcare. Give you a chance to relax.”

Danielle hesitated. She didn’t really have any friends in Nexus Prime, and Niki had been asking to play with other kids.

“Alright, then. Thank you,” she finally agreed. “I pick her up at five. Shall we meet at the restaurant near her school around six?”
