But now, they were separated by divorce and a chasm of unspoken misunderstandings. Even a simple greeting felt fraught with caution.
“Is Niki asleep?” Alexander asked, walking toward her. His voice was a low whisper, careful not to wake the child in her arms.
Danielle snapped back to reality and nodded, tightening her hold on Niki. “Why weren’t you waiting in the car?”
“I was worried you’d have trouble with the door while holding her.”
Alexander reached out to take her bag, but she instinctively flinched away.
His hand froze in mid-air. He slowly retracted it. “The business matters… we can discuss them at the institute tomorrow. You look tired.”
Danielle was surprised by his consideration. She saw the exhaustion etched in his eyes and remembered he was still recovering. A flicker of softness went through her. “It’s fine. We can talk upstairs. It won’t take long.”
Alexander didn’t object, following her into the building.
The motion-activated lights in the hallway flickered on, illuminating their two figures.
Inside the apartment, Danielle gently laid Niki on her bed and tucked her in. She closed the bedroom door quietly before turning to face Alexander, who stood in the middle of the living room.
Moonlight streamed through the window, tracing the familiar lines of his silhouette.
In that moment, Danielle felt a strange certainty that their story had never truly ended.
She gestured for him to sit and poured him a glass of water.
Alexander nodded and sat down. He was as poised as ever, but he looked thinner, and the coldness that once defined him had softened.
“Don’t worry,” Alexander said. “I’ve already confirmed with the guild’s liaison. The modules will be delivered to the institute first thing tomorrow morning.”
“As for the samples, I contacted a lab overseas to put a rush on them. They should arrive within three days, so it won’t delay next month’s field tests.”
As they spoke, Danielle found her gaze repeatedly drawn to him. His lips were paler than they had been during the day, a clear sign he hadn’t fully recovered from the accident. The constant travel and stress from dealing with Nathan had obviously taken a toll.
A pang of sympathy went through her, but she didn’t know how to express it. She watched his hand tremble slightly as he lifted his glass.
Finally, she couldn’t help but ask, “It’s late. Have you booked a hotel? It’s too much for you to keep traveling back and forth, especially since you’re still recovering.”
Alexander’s hand paused. He looked up at her, his eyes a mixture of probing curiosity and a faint, almost imperceptible hope.

I knew it! He’s in love with her but he thinks she loves his brother!...
Oh poor Bianca... regrets, regrets :)...
This is it! Revenge. Way to go Dani....
OMG! Chapters 451-462 had me on edge. I wish we could also read Alexander's POV. I swear I want to punch him and Millie. This story is kind of a push and pull. The main character will win some, then lose some. Hope the writer gives Danielle a big win....
I hope not a lot of important dialogues get cut out, especially between Danielle and Alexander. But I can't complain, really. Thank you again for the updates....
