"Save him?" Danielle's brow furrowed, and a sense of dread washed over her. "What's wrong? Did Nathan do something else? Is he unwell?"
Nash's voice dropped to a near whisper, thick with an anguish he could no longer hide. His eyes began to redden. "It's neither of those things."
"Mr. Davidson… he hasn't been trying to live. Not really. Ever since Dean Gresham's accident, he's blamed himself for everything. He thinks he failed to protect his mentor, failed to stop Nathan."
"Then, with all the trouble from the Davidson family, and with you and Niki… his depression has gotten worse. Several times, he's… he's thought about giving up."
Danielle's heart plummeted as if struck by a sledgehammer.
Rebecca had told her about Alexander's condition, but she never said it was this bad—that he had lost the will to live.
She gripped her handbag, her fingertips trembling. "Is that why he keeps pushing me and Niki away? Because he's afraid we're his weakness?"
"Yes!" Nash nodded emphatically, his voice cracking. "It's not that he doesn't want to see you. He doesn't dare."
"He's terrified his own darkness will affect you. And he's even more afraid that Nathan will use you against him."
"You know what Nathan is capable of. He harmed Dean Gresham and orchestrated Mr. Davidson's car crash. If he were to target you and Niki, the consequences would be unthinkable."
"Mr. Davidson would rather you hate him than see you get dragged into this."
Nash paused, his voice softening. "On Niki's first day of school, Mr. Davidson went to three different stationery stores to find the perfect gift set. He didn't have the courage to give it to her himself, so he asked me to leave it at the school gate and told me not to let her know it was from him."
"I was the one who decided to give it to you instead. I just wanted you to know that he's always thinking of you both. No one knows how hard it's been for him better than I do."
Nash had been with Alexander for nearly a decade. He had seen him as a brilliant and passionate researcher, watched him get forced into taking over the family business, and now saw him ensnared by depression and a bitter family feud.
His rejection wasn't a lack of love; it was the despair of a man who believed he couldn't give her and Niki the peace they deserved.
All the times she had thought he didn't care were, in fact, the moments he was protecting them with everything he had.
He shouldered all the darkness himself, wanting only to leave the light for her and Niki.
Danielle took a deep, steadying breath.
Her voice was hoarse but resolute. "Mr. Langley, don't worry. I won't abandon him."
Seeing the determination in her eyes, Nash was so moved he almost cried. "Thank you, Miss Crawford! If Mr. Davidson knew…"
"Don't tell him I said that," Danielle cut him off. "I'll show him, in my own way, that he's not alone."

I knew it! He’s in love with her but he thinks she loves his brother!...
Oh poor Bianca... regrets, regrets :)...
This is it! Revenge. Way to go Dani....
OMG! Chapters 451-462 had me on edge. I wish we could also read Alexander's POV. I swear I want to punch him and Millie. This story is kind of a push and pull. The main character will win some, then lose some. Hope the writer gives Danielle a big win....
I hope not a lot of important dialogues get cut out, especially between Danielle and Alexander. But I can't complain, really. Thank you again for the updates....
