Alexander tensed, unused to such open affection from Niki. He cleared his throat and ruffled her hair again. "Okay."

Danielle walked over slowly and took a silver fountain pen from the pencil case, holding it out to him. "This is for you. For when you're handling documents."

She had picked it out at a stationery shop the day before.

Alexander looked at the pen, his fingertips brushing against the cool metal. "Thank you," he said, his voice low.

"Niki's still young. Call her when you have time," Danielle said, her tone carrying an unspoken plea. "And… be careful in Northridge City."

Alexander nodded, his gaze returning to Niki. His voice softened. "You be a good girl and listen to your mother, okay?"

"I will!" Niki nodded vigorously, her eyes shining. She adopted a wheedling tone. "Daddy, will you take me to the amusement park when you get back? Please?"

"Like the other daddies do. You can ride the carousel with me and we can eat cotton candy."

Danielle's heart ached at her daughter's words, and her eyes began to burn.

She knew Niki had been dreaming of her father taking her to the amusement park for a very, very long time.

A muscle worked in Alexander's jaw, and his voice was suddenly thick with emotion.

He looked into his daughter's expectant eyes, unable to form the words of refusal. He could only nod, his voice heavy. "Okay. I promise. As soon as I finish my work, I'll come back and take you to the amusement park."

"Yay!"

Niki clapped her hands and snuggled against him again.

The boarding call echoed through the terminal. Alexander stood, still holding Niki, and gently passed her to Danielle. He looked at them, mother and daughter, as if trying to burn the image into his memory.

"I have to go," he said.

"Safe travels," Danielle managed, forcing a smile through the lump in her throat.
