"The bridesmaid dress she gave you—the shoulder straps have been cut. They're only held together by a few threads. During the ceremony, in front of everyone, she's going to step on the hem of your dress, and then..."
And then she would be exposed.
With so many people watching—men, women, young, and old, all from the business world—how could she ever face them in a negotiation again?
It was a move designed to destroy not just her reputation but also her career. It wasn't clever, but it was certainly vicious.
Penelope glanced down at her shoulder strap. Sure enough, it had been snipped.
"When it comes to being despicable, I really can't compete with her."
The wedding was held at an upscale venue, and the guests were already seated.
As maid of honor, Penelope was the model of diligence, helping Rebecca with her makeup, calming her nerves, and coordinating with the wedding party, bustling about cheerfully.
"Oh look, that woman is here too."
One of the bridesmaids, a former classmate of both hers and Rebecca's, nudged her.
Penelope looked out and saw Anna sitting at a front table, chatting warmly with Mrs. Sullivan. Both of them were beaming.
Others in the dressing room saw her too and confirmed that she was the woman from last night. The room immediately erupted in whispers.
It was impossible for Rebecca not to notice. She suppressed her anger, but when Penelope commented, "I wonder if she's here to crash the wedding," she finally snapped.
She claimed she was tired and wanted to be alone, sending the bridesmaids out. Then she called Zebulon to her dressing room.
Soon, the sounds of arguing could be heard from inside.
Penelope decided the time was right. She found a waiter and gave him instructions.
"The guests are all out there! Stop acting like maniacs!" Mr. Sullivan yelled.
"If you embarrass the Sullivan family, you can both get out!" Mrs. Sullivan added.
"Didn't you hear what my daughter said? Your son slept with this woman last night!" Mrs. Winters shouted.
"So he slept with her! What's the big deal?" Mr. Sullivan retorted.
"And if Ms. Flores were willing, our family would much rather have her as a daughter-in-law!" Mrs. Sullivan added fuel to the fire.
"You—you heartless monsters! My daughter is pregnant with your grandchild! How can you treat her like this?" Mrs. Winters burst into tears. "And you," she said, turning to Zebulon, "Rebecca is your wife! After years of being wronged, she finally gets this wedding, and you have to hurt her like this?"
"I don't love her! I don't want to marry her! Penelope and I were fine until she climbed into my bed! How did things get to this point?" Zebulun cried, playing the victim. "It's all her fault, so she deserves what she's getting today!"
